Cairo Back On Top

It has been since 1990 since the Cairo Syrupmakers have claimed a state title. GAVSV.Com went one on one with Coach Tom Fallaw and here is what he had to say......

After losing the final game of the 2007 season Cairo had to know as a team they could regroup and win it all in 2008. That is exactly what they did with a team of 27 Seniors and a star player in Angelo Pease at Quarterback.

What was the difference in this years team as oppose to the 2007 team?

Coach Fallaw-" I think the clear difference was the experience factor of having already played it before. We had 27 seniors that came back off that team and we returned 9 starters on offense and 9 on defense. We had a strong foundation to build on with this group of kids."

How tough was it to face those kids in the locker room after the 2007 loss in the State Championship game?

Fallaw-" Not real hard, when you get to the state championship game there is always going to be a winner and loser. We told the kids that was just life and you are not going to win them all.It was certainly a great season to get to game 15 and being able to host that game. Carver scored with a minute and half to go to beat us and it was a tough loss. We provided a lot of community pride and lot of great memories for Cairo even though we didnt win it that day."

I know that beating Carver was not the ultimate goal but was that a bittersweet feeling to beat the team that had beat you a year earlier?

Fallaw-" It was nice to see them in the semi-finals again. It is kind of a double edge sword, because your kids still have the memory of that loss and we didnt want to lose to them again and let it become a mind thing. It was nice to beat them at their place and get a little revenge from last year.

Coach are you worried the kids will lose that hunger factor going into next year?

Fallaw-" There is not many teams in Georgia that go back to back anymore because teams change so much these days. This year is going to be kind of rebuilding process for us. We may only 4 or 5 kids that have game experience returning. We lost alot starters and key reserves this year. Our JV and 9th grade teams did not lose a game, but that is JV and not varsity so we have to work those kids in. We are going to have to get the kids some experience and probably go through some growing pains in that process.
