A New Era Set To Begin At Chattooga

GAVSV.com caught with new Chattooga coach Brad Waggoner and here is what he had to say about his background and his new program.

I had a good friend of mine, who now coaches in South Georgia tell me one time that " Chattooga is a gold mine of a job." I think the Chattooga County Board of Education found this out also when so many people applied for this job.

There were some BIG TIME names involved with this job opening and Brad Waggoner wound up being the one they chose.

Coach can you tell us a little bit about yourself and where you came from?

Coach Brad Waggoner-" Little of my background is that I played high school ball at Landmark Christian and played college ball at Georgia Tech. I got my college coaching career started at VMI as a GA, left there and went onto the University of Alabama and was a GA there for 2 years. I was then hired at my first full time position at University of West Alabama. After a few college stops I got back into high school and was on the Sandy Creek staff under Rodney Walker for 3 seasons. I was a defensive coordinator at Fayette county high school for one season. I got my first head coaching job at a school down in Daytona Beach Fla where we made the playoffs. I then replaced Mike Dubose at Luverne high school in Alabama. We won the region 2 out of 3 years I was there and our 2006 team went to the quarterfinals. From there I went to Pike County high school in Alabama where got beat in the playoffs by Luverne. Now I have a great opportunity at Chattooga.

Coach what was it about Chattooga that made you want to go there?

Coach Waggoner-" I had always wanted to get back into Georgia as a head coach and that was a goal of mine. I was looking for the right opportunity. I was a finalist for the Pepperell job a few years back and I did alot of research on that job. I have alot of respect for teams like Pepperell and Calhoun. I also found about the rest of this region and how good of area it was. I always thought of Chattooga as a place that was a diamond in the rough. They had made the playoffs a few times in the last ten years. I saw Chattooga alot like Calhoun was ten years ago before Coach Lamb and staff got there. I truly believe Chattooga has all the elements to be a contender for the region title. We have alot of work to do and long way to go. I have a tremendous amount of respect for this area in football."

What have you seen in your kids so far in the short time you have been there?

Coach Waggoner-" Tremendous amount of athlete's all over the place. I have been working with 7th and 8th graders already and the skill athlete's are there as well."

What changes are you doing immediately?

Coach Waggoner-" I brought in a entire new staff with me. I just felt like we needed a fresh start as a program and that is what I did. I was able to hire a great staff."

Are you seeing alot of community support so far?

Coach Waggoner-" The people of Summerville have been very nice to me. You can tell it is a tight knit community. The kids and the community have backed everything we are doing."

Rusty's Final Word- Many of you know I am connected to Pepperell high school as a graduate of that school. When that job was open few years back , I kept hearing about a coach from Alabama that was very impressive and had a great resume that almost got the job. Turns out that coach was Coach Waggoner. Chattooga is a school that can turn the corner and turn it quickly with the right leader. Only time will tell, but from early signs and talking with him Chattooga has the right man for the job.
