PREVIEW 2014: Andrean 59ers
Andrean breezed through the season going 15-0 and capturing the schools 2n state title (2004). They rolled into the state title game outscoring opponents by an average of 44 to 14. They needed a late interception return for a touchdown by Donovan Chandler to hold off Brebeuf 35-27. Coach Phil Mason has some huge shoes to fill in quarterback Matt DeSomer (Southern Illinois), LB Tylor Petkovich (Illinois State), RB/DB Donovan Chandler, LB Noah Pavlina, WR Ramon Guerrero and a handful of talented linemen
No question that this is Josh Barajas. The talented LB won his second straight state title in 2013 after starting for Chicago Mt Carmel’s state title team in 2012. Last season Barajas had 90 tackles. Barajas originally committed to Penn State in the spring. An early summer switch to Notre Dame has finalized his collegiate plans.
Look for WR Jamie Johnson’s numbers to highly increase from last season’s total of 28 receptions for 761 yards and nine touchdowns.
Look for LB David Graham to have a big year next to Barajas at LB and possibly at running back as well.
SCOUTING THE: 59er POSITION BY POSITION
Matt DeSomer won state titles as a QB in football and as the starting pitcher in the state baseball title game. An athlete like that doesn’t come around every day. Senior Jake Paliga and junior Bryan Schmidt will battle to replace DeSomer.
Trevor Berg was the most overlooked player on this team last year. He won’t be this year. He rushed for 1288 yards and 22 touchdowns. Seniors Alex Vode and John Albomonte look to line up next to him.
Jamie Johnson leads this talented group. Look for Barajas to also again line up at TE and as a slot receiver.
Senior RG John Daugherty is the lone returnee up front. Newcomers who need to step up are: Ricky Novak, C.J. Booth, Derek Maldonado, Bryson Brewer and Demond Dixon.
Lukas Berber leads the front three. Andrean will need to replace the big duo of Jhalon Beeks and Tyler Bruce.
Andrean possibly have the most talented player in the state in Barajas. Junior David Graham and seniors Alex Vode and D’Angelo Collins also bring back extensive experience.
Cornerback John Albomonte leads the 59er secondary. Look for Joe Albomonte to also earn reps in the secondary.
The 59ers will have a chance to drive down I-65 once again to Lucas Oil Stadium. With Josh Barajas and RB Trevor Berg leading the way it is very possible. Replacing the leadership and huge production of DeSomer at quarterback will be a huge chore.
