2015 Preview: TERRE HAUTE SOUTH BRAVES

Braves return some talented skill players, but need new quarterback

PREVIEW 2015: TERRE HAUTE BRAVES

Terre Haute South had sort of a renaissance in 2014. The Braves went 10-2 and won a sectional. Coach Tim Herrin hopes for more of the same this go around. Graduation losses will make it tough. QB Timmy Herrin, who threw for just under 3,000 yards, is off the play baseball for the Indiana Hoosiers. Other key graduaton losses are: OL Sam Sullivan, OL Nick Wiram, LB Sammy Velasquez, DB Tanner Hamblen and DB Michael Watt.

STANDOUT

Senior running back Dante Johnson was a threat rushing and receiving last year. He carries the ball 136 times for 642 yards while catching 26 passes for 357 yards.

BREAKOUT PLAYER

It is hard to call Justin Jenkins a breakout player after catching 57 passes for 1187 yards last season. The Iowa Baseball recruits role may need to change some with a new quarterback on hand.

TOP UNDERCLASSMEN

Junior DE/OLB Ethan Cox (6-3, 200) had 102 tackles as a sophomore.

BEST POSITION BATTLE:

This will undoubtedly be the quarterback position. Will it be junior Evan Steppe or could another play move to qb.

SCOUTING THE: BRAVES POSITION BY POSITION

QUARTERBACK

Whover is under center has huge shoes to fill. The Braves whole offense will need to change if a passer doesn’t emerge.

RUNNING BACK

Dante Johnson may see more carries as a young quarterback emerges.

RECEIVERS

The Braves have a pair of standouts returning in Justin Jenkins and senior Kameron Bell (31 receptions 443 yards). Senior Logan Bell also could join the fun.

OFFENSIVE LINE

Senior Drake Latta (6-4, 290) is the lone returnee up front. Look for senior Ben Dillon (5-11, 240), junior Abel Rivera (5-10, 240), junior Brandon Peck (6-2, 215) and junior Logan Jones (6-6, 300) to fill in

DEFENSIVE LINE

Senior Lane Bonar (44 tackles), junior Ethan Cox (102 tackles), senior Drake Worrell (22 tackles) and junior Abel Rivera (41 tackles) all return.

LINEBACKERS

Junior Brandon Peck (20 tackles) will need to lead a young group at linebacker.

DEFENSIVE BACKS

Senior Justin Cornelous (38 tackles) and sophomore Chris Latta (16 tackles) are experienced in the secondary.

OUTLOOK:

If the Braves are to keep on their upward spiral, a quarterback must emerge. Coach Tim Herrin has some nice playmakers in Dante Johnons, Justin Jenkins and Kameron Bell. The defense will have to be strong early. Look for th Braves to again be solid in 5A this season.
