Standouts Ben Skowronek and Matt Anderson lead the Spartans

PREVIEW 2015: HOMESTEAD SPARTANS

Coach Chad Zolman and the Spartans went 8-3 last season. This season Homestead joins rival Carroll in joining the Summit Conference. The Spartans return plenty of experience on each side of the ball. Zolman will have to replace QB Logan Ormsby, WR John Lark, OL Mitch Parker, OL Zach Alexander, LB Gunnar Goebel and LB Erik Elston.

STANDOUT

Wide receiver Ben Skowronek has a great junior season catching 42 passes for 841 yards and 12 touchdowns. The athletic standout was also a member of the State Champion Spartan basketball squad. College coaches took note and in June Skowronek verballed to Northwestern.

BREAKOUT PLAYER

Junior Hunter Terrell was an immediate standout on defense registering 66 tackles. Look for him to put up some bigger numbers this season.

TOP UNDERCLASSMEN

Safety Matt Anderson had 8 interceptions and 103 tackles as a sophomore. Anderson is one of the state’s top junior prospects.

BEST POSITION BATTLE:

Replacing quarterback Logan Ormsby will be the biggest challenge for the Spartans.

SCOUTING THE: SPARTANS POSITION BY POSITION

QUARTERBACK

Junior Drew Keszei and senior Garrett Drysdale will battle for the top spot.

RUNNING BACK

Leading rusher Landon Durnell (498 yards) is back. Junior Adam Lutz, senior Jonah Watson and junior Carson Cox are other ball carriers.

RECEIVERS

Ben Skowronek leads a loaded receiving group. Seniors Austin Krider (23 for 353) and Carlos Sanchez (31 for 539). Connor Fitzharris and Moses Girardot are other receiving options.

OFFENSIVE LINE

Senior Drew Uhrhammer (6-2, 230) and junior DC Mickey (6-4, 260) are experienced linemen.

DEFENSIVE LINE

Junior Geoff Bilbrey (6-5, 260) had 13 tackles and senior Drew Uhrhammer had 25 tackles.

LINEBACKERS

Hunter Terrell (66 tackles), Moses Girardot (57 tackles) and Jack Northquist (40 tackles) lead an elite linebacking group. You will also see senior Kyle Burke, senior Landon Durnell, sophomore Kyle Nunemaker and junior R.J. Carpenter.

DEFENSIVE BACKS

Junior Matt Anderson is a playmaker in the secondary. Cornerbacks Noah Meeks (21 tackles) and Zach Schulz (19 tackles) also return. Others in the mix are Ben Skowronek, Carson Cox and Jonah Watson. Basketball standout Tahj Curry also joins the mix.

OUTLOOK:

An explosive group of receivers leads the Spartans offense. If a quarterback steps up the offense will be potent. The Homestead defense is abundant with returnees. Look for some fun games in the new Summit Conference.
