Arsenal Tech Coach Anthony Henderson
You now enter your second year in the North Central Conference. How has that changed the Tech program?
#1 our travel around the state has increased. We didn’t know what to make of the conference before year one started. Obviously the conference was going to be good in basketball, but we couldn’t get a football feel. After a 3-4 record in conference; we fully understand what to expect now.
Where do you this program in say 10 years?
In 10yrs. I hope to have built up the program’s participation population. I would like to have 70-85 varsity and JV along with a 30-40 man Freshmen squad. We would like to content for both the Conference and Sectional titles on a yearly basis as well.
How has the facilities upgrade helped your program?
Facilities wise we can practice when the teams with grass cannot. If we are forced inside; we are quickly back to the turf once the storm passes. The turf field and Chase Legacy Center have become the ‘First Impression’ symbols or our Program.
As a former Big Ten player what are you able to tell your kids about the recruiting process?
The recruiting process has REALLY changed in the 25yrs. Coaches used to recruit the HC, parents and friends of a recruit. Now once they get the transcript, email address, cell # and or Twitter handle. The people close to the recruit become invisible.
Who is the most underrated college prospect on your team?
Clarence Reed. Senior Slot/ FB.. He carries a 3.8 GPA.. Takes mostly honors classes. He also takes a college course or two at IUPUI.. He has applied to Stanford, Purdue, Notre Dame and Northwestern.. He is the best lifter on the Team and it’s hardest worker on the field.. He will be the Mayor of Indianapolis one day!!
Who is the one player who no one knows about yet, but will?
Jaylen Turner.. Junior OL/ DL 6’5/ 285lbs. and MEAN.. He has Blue Chip/ D1 written all over him. He is still working on his confidence but the sky is the limit.
Biggest position battle as we end the summer and head to fall camp?
Who will be our starting Full Back.
Who is one guy on your team who might not be a high level recruit, but is a great football player?
Fernando Zuniga. Our place kicker and punter in training. 95% of his KO’s land five yards deep in the end zone. The only FG/ PAT’s that he missed last year were either blocked or were 50+yds away. Diamond in the rough.
In what way has recruiting improved since you first started coaching?
The Regional Combine deals that the different colleges have now have led to more exposure and opportunity for the HS players.
What are the negatives about the current recruiting process?
As I mentioned before they aren’t very PERSONAL anymore.
