"I am getting ready for the 2009 season by working hard and doing the things it takes to be successful," Lewis told me in a phone interview just after a torrid workout in the Ben Davis weight room with 170 other BD Giants. One of the reasons Lewis has caught several Division 1 schools early is his strength and power that has developed under the watch eye of Head Coach Mike Kirschner and Head Strength Coach Kevin Vanderbush.
Coach Kirshner added, "Some colleges are looking at him as a hard corner who can tackle. They like how physical he is, and if he can cover and be as physical, he will be sought after by several more schools." Four schools have made offers - Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky and Purdue. Isaiah made an unofficial trip to Indiana and was impressed with the new building facilities. "I liked Indiana's new add on at the stadium and their new weight room is going to be huge," Lewis said. He went on to add, "I don't have a favorite place right now, but I want to visit to get a feel for each place."
He indicates he will not decide until midway through the season. Right now he is concentrating on strength and conditioning and getting ready for varsity baseball season. But, he definitely feels that there is some unfinished business left for the Ben Davis Giants. Ben Davis was beaten last year just one game away form from the Indiana big school state finals. "We want to go to the state finals," Lewis said emphatically "and we feel we can do it."
The tradition rich Ben Davis football program will have to rely on the hard work of Isaiah Lewis and his teammates. Silently Lewis has garnered four offers and February is not over. There are a cast of other notable players on the Ben Davis roster, but Lewis leads the pack with his four offers and an eye toward a trip to the state finals. As more college coaches find out about his ability, he won't be sneaking up on the competition. Isaiah Lewis will be rumbling down the tracks.
