Indiana's Most Prolific HS Football Team

Cathedral High School football can be described as a love/hate relationship. Those of us who have been around Indiana high school football for awhile certainly respect the program. It is always the first school mentioned when talk centers around the Indiana's private/parochial controversy. Yet Cathedral carries the tradition and reputation of a first rate private school education.

Simply put, Cathedral has the most wins in the history of Indiana high school football. As the 2009 season, Cathedral has won more games than any other team in Indiana with 635 wins and 10 state final championship appearances. Eight starters from last year are playing college football in 2009. It is really just a matter of reloading. An interesting point is that in the Indiana Scout database, Cathedral has three successive quarterbacks on the recruiting radar (2010)Kofi Hughes, (2011) Connor Barthel, and (2012)Corey Babb. All three are already credentialed. Kofi has an offer from Indiana University.

Cathedral is favored to win the 4A 2009 state final which would give them back to back state championships. Winning a state championship isn't always that easy, but at Cathedral it is expected. Rick Streiff is the head coach at Cathedral, who is returning for his 15th season after a few years teaching and coaching at a public school. In his first year back, he won his 5th state championship. All his championships wins were with Cathedral. Because of Cathedral's success, it is hard to get Indiana schools to schedule the private school powerhouse. So going out of state becomes a necessity, but it plays in Cathedral's favor because Cathedral plays quality programs that ready them for the state playoff series.

In looking for some of Cathedral's keys to success, you don't have to look any further than second year starter, Kofi Hughes, quarterback. Two years ago Kofi's athletic life centered on basketball, but now it's football that keeps Kofi focused and working toward his goals. Kofi (6' 2" 190 lbs) will start at the quarterback position and brings tremendous athleticism. Kofi has been so busy on the summer camp circuit that his recruitment has been almost solely based on his athleticism. Nick Najem also returns at running back having run for 1,216 yards and 12 touchdowns in '09. Seniors Jack Buchanan (5' 10", 235 lbs) will be at center and Wes Stokes (5' 10", 275 lbs) is at guard as the only returning offensive linemen.

On defense, Cameron Beard (6' 6" 245 lbs), who has committed to Cincinnati University, is a defensive end in the 5-3 defense imposed by Cathedral, and also D1 prospect, Jake Zupancic (5' 11" 190 lbs) will play safety. Kyle Kennedy (6' 3" 190 lbs), a junior, will play outside linebacker. Each of these three are players and are a great base for building the 2009 edition of the Cathedral defense.
