Biggest Weekend of Football in Indiana, Yet!

A 5A state title rematch and the Colts give us some big games this weekend involving some of the state's best high school players. One of the top teams from Ohio (Cincinnati St. Xavier) takes on Indiana's surging Cathedral, who upended Warren Central and Carmel in the first two weeks of Indiana's high school football season.

One thing is absolutely certain…the Indianapolis Colts have stepped up and put their money where their mouth is in supporting Indiana high school football. This weekend features some excellent high school football and Indiana Varsity Scout's best recruits as listed on our state's Scout site.

Friday Night
Center Grove vs. Carmel @ Carmel
7:00 p.m.

Last year at the 5A state final, Center Grove stunned Carmel with the most prolific comeback in state finals history. Carmel lost their opening game to Cathedral. This game has several repercussions as it begins the quest for the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference championship and both teams want momentum to carry them into the next contest. Center Grove is ranked #1 in the state in Class 5A and Carmel can only climb upward with a win at home.

Players listed by IVS as players to watch from Carmel are Chase Varndell, Devin Brinson, and Brian East. From Center Grove, IVS lists Joel Cox, Jeff Ponder, and Garrett Mack (who has committed to Ball State).

Saturday
Noblesville vs. Zionsville
11:00 a.m. Lucas Oil Stadium

Noblesville can make a case for Lucas Oil being their home field as they play several games in the Indianapolis downtown venue. But Zionsville has seemingly made a jump to 5A without great difficulty and they take on the Millers in the first game in the inaugural Horseshoe Classic. Zionsville has two players currently among the elite players in Indiana. Blake Lueders and Jack Denton will put their skills to test against Noblesville.

Indianapolis Cathedral vs. St. Xavier (Cincinnati)
1:45 p.m. Lucas Oil Stadium

Two of the 2009 Midwest premier high school football teams square off and a national ranking is at stake. St. Xavier travels from Cincinnati after a big win over nationally ranked Colerain High School. Cathedral has opened with two big wins over Carmel and Warren Central. Something is going to give in this classic Ohio vs. Indiana matchup. Matt James of St. Xavier headlines as one of Ohio's top recruits along with Luke Massa, who has committed to Cincinnati. Cathedral's Kofi Hughes has committed to Indiana, Cameron Beard to Cincinnati. Also on IVS's list are Jake Zupancic, Nick Najem and 2011 Cathedral linebacker Kyle Kennedy.

Columbus North vs. Bloomington North
4:30 p.m. Lucas Oil Stadium

Columbus North came up short against Columbus East last weekend and looks to rebound against Bloomington North. A steadily improving Bloomington North needs to make a statement and Columbus North could be its exclamation point. Columbus North may have the best punter in Indiana in Kollin Carman and tight end Jake Reed is a junior whose stock is rising with each game.

Pike vs Southport
7:15 p.m. Lucas Oil Stadium

Pike is coming off a loss to Center Grove and Southport thumped Anderson. This is a big conference Indiana game as well. Southport has a star in Joe Gilliam a Purdue recruit at linebacker, while Pike has the best tandem of receivers in Indiana in Dyjuan Lewis and Anthony McClung. Patrick Robinson at offensive tackle , Blake Riley, Evan Moncrief and David Williams round out the Scout standouts for Pike.
