Kentucky Signings Wrap-up

When the dust settles, the state of Kentucky should have as many as 20 division 1 signees for the 2011 class – a class headlined by two prospects who made somewhat surprising decisions.

When the dust settles, the state of Kentucky should have as many as 20 division 1 signees for the 2011 class – a class headlined by two prospects who made somewhat surprising decisions.

Lamar Dawson, the state's top player and Mr. Football, was believed to be down to Tennessee and Kentucky, though Dawson never stated himself that was the case. Dawson also considered Oregon, USC and Central Florida in his top five schools. Most rumors over the weekend stated he would pick Tennessee, but Kentucky seemed quietly confident they would land the four-star linebacker.

Unfortunately for those SEC schools, Dawson went another direction and picked the Southern California Trojans. The decision was rather surprising, but Lane Kiffin and his staff made a great pitch and it appeared that Dawson just wanted out of the state of Kentucky.

Another player who's leaving the state is Jon Davis. Davis, a four-star tight end committed to Kentucky well over a year ago, but there was question about how solid that commitment was for months. In the end, Davis appeared to be leaning towards the Louisville Cardinals. But there was another school involved.

Ron Zook's Illinois Fighting Illini picked up the Eastern prospect in somewhat a surprising decision, but Davis had no significant ties to the state of Kentucky and felt like he was better off in Champaign, continuing his education and his football career.

Three other players are mulling over options as well before making decisions soon.

Michael Fluellen was thought to be ready to sign with UCF yesterday, but he didn't sign and there's no word when the 6-foot-5, 200-pound receiver will make his choice.

Former Louisville commit Jerrell Moore is considering the Cardinals and the Central Florida as well. Moore had his offer pulled last month, but now the offer is back on the table. Moore is expected to make his announcement on Friday.

Also expected to make a decision on Friday is Seneca quarterback DaMarcus Smith. Smith is making a decision between Louisville, who he remains softly committed to and also Central Florida. It's unknown what Smith will do, but his addition will be a big pickup for either team.
