Speed Kills

Some say size matters. That may be true to an extent, but there is nothing like having pure speed. Speed kills.

Dutchtown product, Desmond Thompson (5-7, 160, 4.45) possesses the speed that is needed to compete at the next level. Thompson is not the biggest of kids, but it is his speed that disguises it.

While playing running back for Dutchtown High School last year, Thompson earned both All-District and All-Parish honors.

His legs caught the eyes of a few coaches.

"I went to a Southern Mississippi camp and a Louisiana Tech camp," said Thompson. "I ran a 4.45 40 yard dash at the Louisiana Tech camp. The coaches there were impressed. They said I had great speed."

What did Thompson take from his trips?

"I really enjoyed both of the camps," Thompson explained. "I thought Southern Miss had a great atmosphere."

Thompson has not received any offers, but says some coaches have told him where they see him fitting on their team.

"All of the coaches I have talked to have pretty much said the same thing," Thompson informed. "They say that I may not be big enough to play running back in college and they would try me out at defensive back. However, the Southern Miss coaches said they would give me a chance to try out running back and depending on how I did would determine if they would move me to defense or not. I enjoy playing running back, but I would have no problem moving to defense."

Thompson said the schools who seem to be most interested in him are Southeastern Louisiana University, Nichols St, Louisiana Tech, and the University of Southern Mississippi.

What does Thompson bring to the table?

"I'm the fastest person on my team," said Thompson. "I'm also a leader. We have a bunch of seniors on my team and no one ever tells me anything because I'm a hard worker. That is one thing about me, I am going to work."

Thompson recorded a 2.5 GPA last school year as well as a 19 on the ACT.
