Scott's One to Watch

Ferriday High School is off to a 7-1 start this year and do-it-all athlete Devante Scott is a big reason for the Trojans' success.

Scott, a 5-foot-11, 175-pound junior, does it all for the 2A school:  running back, defensive back, quarterback, kicker, wide receiver, punt and kick returner.  In fact, Scott was also the punter, until head coach Freddie Harrison decided to give his star athlete a play or two off each game.

"I'm not a writer," said Harrison, "but I'd say that Devante is a five-star (player). He has a lot of potential and does a good job of taking advantage of his opportunities."

You can't argue about Scott's production.  The athletic junior has rushed for 414 yards on 35 carries - well over 10 yards a pop - and seven touchdowns.  In addition, Scott has caught 15 passes for 305 yards (and four more TDs).

Wait.  That's not all.  Scott also has scored on a punt return.  And, don't forget, he also handles the kicking chores.

"I don't come off the field much," Scott admitted.  "On offense, I take some snaps at quarterback in the Wildcat.  I also line up at running back and receiver."

The Trojans try to spread out the opposing defense in order to give Scott plenty of room to maneuver.

"We run as much spread as we can," said Harrison.  "Four and five wide."

And that's just the offensive side of the football.  Scott also is a standout defensive back.

"I have two interceptions and 47 tackles," Scott said.

Don't get it twisted, however.  Scott was merely reading numbers off the statistical charts kept by the coaches.  He doesn't keep up with his stats too much.  In fact, Scott said he didn't know how many passes he has broken up because "the coaches don't have that on the chart."

Scott, who is receiving some interest from Louisiana Tech, runs a 4.5 in the 40.
