Another Offer for Sams

St. Paul's wide receiver Jermaine Sams received his second scholarship offer recently.

St. Paul's wide receiver Jermaine Sams received his second scholarship offer recently and it came as a complete surprise to the speedy junior.

"Coach (Ken Sears) called me into his office and handed me a letter," said Sams.  "It was an offer from South Alabama.  It took me by surprise, because I didn't know they were looking at me.  After that happened, I talked to their wide receivers coach and he wants me to come down there and visit in July.

"They're in the process of moving from 1-AA to 1-A and they'll be in the Sun Belt Conference soon.  I'm also getting mail from LSU, Louisville, Arkansas, Tulsa, Miami and Nebraska.  Miami told me that they want me to come down there for a camp in July and that if I do well, they'll offer me."

Last year, Sams showcased his ability, catching 29 passes for 662 yards (23 yards per catch) with seven touchdowns.  In addition, he returned eight kicks for 309 yards (more than 38-yard average per return) and another TD.  Those exploits caught the attention of SMU, which was the first school to offer Sams.

"I talk to (SMU wide receivers coach) Coach Reinbold all the time," Sams said.  "We talk every week - about everything - just building our relationship.  He's going to be at our spring game on May 14.  Practice is going really well.  We're getting our plays down and some of the young guys are stepping up.  We have some young players who have to replace some senior offensive lineman and (defensive end) Houston Bates (Illinois signee).

"I went to the Nike Training Camp in Baton Rouge a few weeks ago.  I did pretty good and I learned a lot.  The coaches there went into great detail."
