Army Junior Combine: Day One Report

Several high school standouts from the state of Michigan participated in day 1 of the Army Combine, here is the full report on how they did plus a few additional names we missed in yesterday's report.

We knew heading in that Detroit Cass Tech CB Boubacar Cissoko was the top player from the state here. What we did not know is that he would turn out to be one of the top players period. Boubacar by all accounts was one of the top three performers at camp today. Although he did not completely shut out the receivers here, he showed the best quickness and recovery speed of any corner in attendance. He also has the brash, confident, in-your-face attitude most teams will want in a corner.

Another well known name in the state is Detroit Country Day's RB Jonas Gray. Gray is certainly very physically impressive. He has a short, stocky build (5'9, 210) and is one of the strongest backs here (he did 18 reps on the bench press). He has some difficulties as a pass receiver as that is not something he has been asked to do much in high school, but his game is a power running game. Gray is definitely a high major D1 recruit.

A relatively unknown player until today is Detroit Southwestern DB Troy Tidwell. The 5'11, 175-lb Tidwell was raw in his backpedal and technique, but showed good athleticism and anticipation making several nice plays on the ball. He played free safety last season but will likely switch to cornerback this season. He has several MAC schools on his radar but this is a kid who might do a little better if he gets himself to camps this summer.

Detroit Southeastern WR/QB Charles Burrell spent all day with the receivers and had a very impressive day. He has a strong build and good athletic ability and seemed to be natural at adjusting to passes and snatching the ball out of the air.

The two defensive ends from Detroit, Nicholas Perry (Mackenzie) and Philepae Phillips (Central) both showed some athleticism in 1-1s, but both are very light and will need to add a significant amount of weight to remain defensive ends in college.

Darrin Williams – RB – Detroit King (5'6, 165) - Cat quick scat back type.

Kyle Brown – K – Ann Arbor Saline (5'10, 175) – The Saline QB was also a standout kicker. However, we did not get to see him in kicking drills today.

Calix Sholander – P – Crystal Falls Forest Park (5'8, 135) – Again, we did not see the kicking today, but Sholander is in attendance and kicked his way into attendance by beating out other punters at a combine tryout.

Durwin Bateman
– LB – Detroit Southeastern (5'7, 225) – Had a productive season for Southeastern last year. Has some skills, but showed his rawness today.

Brandon Wilkerson - CB - Detroit Cass Tech (5'8, 160) - Boubacar's teammate is undersized, but has some quickness to his game.

The following were Michigan kids who registered but did not make the trip.

Anthony Anchrum - WR - Detroit Cass Tech
Cortez Smith - WR/DB - Detroit Cass Tech
Charles Fobbs - LB - Detroit Cass Tech
Fred Smith - WR - Detroit Southeastern
