Newton Not One to Sleep On

Gobles High is home to one of the state's top athletes. Jake Newton is a star both on the basketball court and the gridiron. Lately and in light of his recent NIKE camp performances, he is starting to receive attention on the national scale.

Gobles High School had quite the season last year. The Tigers went 9-1 and it wouldn't have been possible without a big year from their star Jake Newton.

Newton has played QB, RB, WR and Safety and has excelled at each. As a junior, he passed for 455 yards and 6 touchdowns, had 4 carries for 57 yards and 3 scores and caught 19 passes. On defense, he was one of the state leaders in interceptions with 7 and also chipped in 49 tackles. If that wasn't enough, he had six punt and kick returns for scores and blocked three punts.

His great junior season combined with some recent NIKE camp performances has made Newton a rising name right now.

"He is being recruited by multiple D1 schools and Ivy League," Gobles Head Coach Jim Wiseley reported, "He has also been invited to attend a National Camp in California. Jake has attended multiple Nike combines where he is rated in the top 70."

At 6'2, 185 lbs, Newton has the size to project well as either a wide receiver or safety at the next level. Either way, college coaches will be wise to give him a look. His next move will be that national camp in California at the Rose Bowl and if his recent camp performances are any indication, that trip should do nothing but enhance his stock.
