Most people who witnessed Shelton Gaines' pass rushing display in one on one drills at the Cincinnati Scout combine were admittedly a little surprised. But they admittedly had not seen him play before with pads on. They found out what Gaines' opponents already knew: he can play.
Last season, moving between defensive end and linebacker and also playing left tackle on defense, he recorded 77 tackles, 3 forced fumbles and of course, 14 sacks. Getting to the quarterback has become his specialty, but even after that success a year ago, his dominance this past weekend was still unexpected.
"I did a lot better than I thought," he admitted, "it was cold down there, but I thought it was pretty good. Actually, it was great."
The schools Gaines reports as recruiting him the hardest are Ball State, Buffalo and Nebraska. In addition, he has a top five of the aforementioned Cornhuskers, Wisconsin, Michigan, Notre Dame and Penn State. Most of those schools are recruiting him as an outside linebacker.
This summer, he plans on heading to a NIKE Camp, another Scout combine in Chicago and the University of Michigan summer camp. It is there that he hopes to continue to show why he is a special prospect.
"I'm quick off the ball and very aggressive."
But if you were in Cincinnati, you already knew that.
