Kirk Deering can really throw the ball and it doesn't really matter which ball he's throwing. The West Catholic (Grand Rapids) junior excelled this year both as a quarterback on the football field and as a pitcher on the baseball diamond.
"Currently, I am being rectruited by Michigan State, Western Michigan, Central Michigan, Purdue, and Northern Illinois," he reported, "I am also being rectruited for baseball, but I preferably want to play football."
For his junior season, Deering put up nearly 1,000 yards through the air and scored 20 total touchdowns. Those numbers should only go up with the work he is putting in to prepare himself for his senior season.
"As of right now, I am 6'0 180lbs," he said, which is 15 lbs more than his weight during the season, "I have been lifting 4 times a week, and have been doing speed and agility twice a week."
He recently had a chance to head to State College, PA for an Elite 11 camp to improve the finer points of his game and to scope out some of the other top signal callers in attendance.
"The Elite 11 camp went very well for me, it was a great experience for me to be able to compare myself with some of the top quarterbacks in the nation."
Although it was his first time participating in something on that scale, Deering was not intimidated by the situation and came out of it pleased with his performance.
"I personally think that I ranked in around the top 15 out of the 95 kids there."
Michigan Varsity will have video highlights on Deering later in the week.
