Week 8 Predictions

Conference titles are on the line and the PSL playoffs are starting. There is a crisp chill in the air and there is no better time to be a high school football fan in the state of Michigan. Here are the big matchups and our thoughts.

Portage Central (6-1) @ Battle Creek Central (5-2)
BCC needs this one to seal up a playoff spot, but it will be a tough test against a Portage Central team that has been strong all year. Expect a big dose of Larry Caper and Bill Young, but the times the Bearcats have had to put the ball in the air, they have struggled. Portage Central has been good against the run and should be able to at least contain the strong running attack of BCC and force them to have to throw to win the game.
Prediction: Portage Central - 26, Battle Creek Central - 21

East Grand Rapids (7-0) @ Caledonia (6-1)
This has developed into quite the rivalry of late and tonight's game will be a big one. With the exception of a loss to Lowell for Caledonia, both teams have trucked through the season. But the Pioneers have better balance with Joe Glendening on a tear running the ball and Cal Blair making good decisions through the air.
Prediction: EGR - 31, Caledonia - 27

Dearborn (5-2) @ Monroe (6-1)
It will be a contrast in styles as the air attack of Dearborn led by QB Anthony Mifsud takes on a tough Monroe running game with Brandyn Harris and Jessie Johnson. I'm going to go with the ground game though as I think Monroe out-physicals Dearborn.
Prediction: Monroe - 30, Dearborn - 22

Detroit Renaissance (6-1) vs Detroit Denby (5-2) @ Det. Northwestern
The PSL playoffs kickoff and Saturday has this outstanding matchup in store. Renaissance has good balance on offense as senior QB Jeray Carraway has had a great season. However, Denby's rushing attack lead by Glenn Winston and Allante Shy is one of the most dangerous in the PSL. This one should be low scoring and defensive, but I think the Tars will grind one out.
Prediction: Denby - 14, Renaissance - 8

Ypsilanti (6-1) @ Highland Park (5-2)
The Braves can win the conference title tonight. It will be a good matchup between the Ypsilanti offense and a stout Polar Bear defense. However, Highland Park just hasn't been able to move the ball consistently in their two losses and I think that will be the difference. They also had trouble stopping Melvindale's ground game and they will see a lot of Martez Dykes tonight. On a side note, Jonathan Dandridge vs Marvon Sanders will be a very entertaining matchup.
Prediction: Ypsilanti - 20, Highland Park - 12
