Finals Preview: Detroit King vs Midland

One of the better matchups of the weekend is Midland taking on Detroit King. A contrast in styles as the athletic King team takes on an undersized, but tough Midland group. Can junior QB Andrew Maxwell make throws with Nick Perry in his face? Is this the year a PSL team wins states for the first time? Read our report and prediction.

Midland Offense vs King Defense

The line will be the key. They have the tough task of trying to contain Nick Perry and open up holes for Colter Roberson. With King's size advantage up front, it might be tough for Roberson to get going. Luckily, Andrew Maxwell has one of the state's best arms. If the Chemics are to win, they might have to let him cut loose like they did against Lowell.

RB 34 Colter Roberson Sr 5'8, 170
FB 32 Charlie Leffingwell So 5'10, 190

C 60 Jason Jenkins Sr 6'1, 265
G 95 Andrew Grillo Sr 6'0, 215
OT 70 Wesley LaCourt Jr 6'4, 230
Can they slow down Roberson and make Maxwell have to put the ball in the air? Maxwell is dangerous, but the King secondary would have the advantage, especially with Nick Perry providing the pressure. Safeties Donovan Dickerson and Brandon Colbert are athletic ballhawks. Senior LB Edgar Pouncy will be one of the keys to slowing down the Chemic run game.
LB 8 Nick Perry Sr 6'4, 240
DE 43 Demarcus Cleveland Sr 5'11, 230
NT 56 Orlando McCord Jr 6'3, 250

King Offense vs Midland Defense

Weapons abound for King. QB Dickerson has been efficient. He can throw well on the move and has the arm to get it downfield to big targets in Whitfield and Perry. Williams is the engine of the offense. He had over 2000 yards this season and has the 4.3 speed to house it at any time. Up front, King has a size advantage as they have several players with college futures up front, the best of which is the left tackle Martin.
QB 10 Donovan Dickerson Sr 6'1, 185
RB 25 Darrin Williams Sr 5'6, 165
FB 34 Sam Lilly Sr 5'9, 230
WR 88 Flenard Whitfield Sr 6'6, 220
WR 21 Corey Chatman Sr 5'7, 150
TE 8 Nick Perry Sr 6'4, 240
OT 76 Antonio Martin Jr 6'7, 270
G 52 Aronde Stanton Sr 6'1, 230
C 66 Chris Thomas Sr 5'10, 250
G 55 Eric Yeager Jr 6'2, 265
OT 56 Orlando McCord Jr 6'3, 250
Midland's front seven is undersized, but very tough and fundamentally sound. That will be key as they face an offensive line that will outweigh them by 50+ pounds per man. The linebackers are fast and active though. In the secondary, they must guard against the big play. Albrecht has speed, but Porter has better size, so he will likely draw Whitfield with Prokop helping over the top. The key will be not having to commit too many players to the run. They can't let Williams get off to a fast start or they'll be in for a long day.
DE 95 Andrew Grillo Sr 6'0, 215
DT 54 Dawson Barcey Sr 6'3, 215
NG 14 Ben Dvorak Jr 5'4, 165
DT 57 Evan Kriz Jr 5'9, 190
DE 9 Andrew Cox Sr 6'3, 230
LB 4 Keegan Aguilera Sr 6'0, 195
LB 33 Joel Parsons Sr 5'10, 165
LB 34 Colter Roberson Sr 5'8, 170
S 5 Tyler Prokop Sr 5'9, 155
CB 6 Michael Albrecht Jr 5'8, 155
CB 16 Catlin Porter Sr 5'11, 165

BOTTOM LINE
King has the talent advantage, but Midland is well coached and tough. For some reason, King coach James Reynolds has not gotten his due though. He'll have this team focused and ready to go. Midland is tough and will keep it close, but in the end, too much speed and size on King. I see it being similar to last year's Muskegon-De La Salle game.

PREDICTION
Detroit King - 21, Midland - 18
