The season has already given the Nebraska High School football fan some exciting action. We have seen two new teams open action in Class A. Some traditional powerhouses have stumbled and then there has been surprise teams.
The Nebraska Prep Sports staff are currently..
Week 1 --- 11-4 = 73%
Week 2 --- 10-5 = 67%
Overall --- 21-9 = 70%
So now we look at some of the top games and our picks for week three.
*** Millard North at Millard West
*** Millard North has shown a dominating running game and strong line play. Millard West has a defense that is the strengh of their team. West will need to score some points to win this game and that has been difficult for them.
*** the pick .... Millard North 15-6
*** Omaha Central at Bellevue East
*** Omaha Central has had a tough schedule so far this season but they have not been able to show their talent at the skill position due to losing the battle of the line of scrimmage. Bellevue East is a solid team so Central is in major trouble if they have not improved over the past two games along the line.
*** the pick .... Omaha Central 28-14
*** Grand Island at North Platte
*** North Platte has been riding the strong, fast legs of Danny Woodhead to a 2-0 record. Grand Island has a balanced attack but is still looking for the player to go to when they need the play. This game should be very close.
*** the pick ... North Platte 33-28
*** Omaha Skutt at Omaha Roncalli
*** Omaha Roncalli has played a tough opening schedule but has established themselves as the No. 1 team in Class B. Skutt is also undefeated with a win over Elkhourn in week 1. Both teams are well coached and this should be an interesting game for both schools to talk about.
*** the pick ... Omaha Roncalli 28-20
*** Omaha Gross at Lincoln Pius X
*** Omaha Gross has shown good balance on offense and a good defense. Lincoln Pius X was suppose to be focused on re-establishing their position atop Class B, but they have not shown a great deal so far this year.
*** the pick ... Omaha Gross 28-12 **UPSET SPECIAL**
*** McCook at Scottsbluff
*** This game will have a playoff atmosphere about it. Two major powerhouses of western Nebraska who are use to meeting deep in the playoffs.
*** The pick .... McCook 12-9
*** Alliance at Lexington
*** This will be another great game in western Nebraska. This will be Alliances first game against a Nebraska team (they have defeated two Wyoming teams). Lexington has lost two games but this maybe the week.....
*** the pick .... Lexington 20-15
*** Auburn at Nebraska City
*** Auburn rated in C-1 and Nebraska City is rated in Class B. These two towns are very close and many of the kids play against each other in a variety of sports year round. The football teams are very good. This is a Saturday game.
*** the pick ... Auburn 22-21 ** UPSET SPECIAL**
*** Fairbury at Syracuse
*** Fairbury is a very good 0-2 team. Syracuse is looking to bounce back from a tough defeat to Wilber-Clatonia.
*** the pick .... Syracuse 28-23
*** Cross County at Sandy Creek
*** Two ranked and undefeated teams. Sandy Creek has been a surprise to some observers. Cross County has been a Class C-2 power since the school was formed.
*** the pick .... Cross County 33-20
*** Lawrence-Nelson at Wymore Southern
*** Lawrence-Nelson is the two time defending Class C-2 state champion. In fact they have been state champions each year of their existence.
*** the pick .... Lawrence-Nelson
*** Clarkson at Howells
*** Howells is going for yet another title and deserves to be watched every week. If they lose focus or overlook Clarkson ....
*** the pick ... Howells 48-15
*** Rushville at Hay Springs
*** Brandon Johnson at 6-4 and 280 lbs has the speed and athletic ability to be a dominating influence in 8-man football. Hay Springs has good speed but will need a couple of turnovers.
*** the pick ... Rushville 45-18
*** Bruning-Davenport at Shickley
*** Shickley is coming off a big win over Lewiston. Bruning-Davenport has won their first two games. Cole Schultz has been a leader for Shickley.
*** the pick ... Shickley 38-34
*** Cedar Rapids at Pope John
*** The Pope John Crusaders have a strong defense and have not allowed a point to be scored against them this season. They are also averaging 47 points a game over their first two games.
*** the pick ... Pope John 47-0
