The Kicking Game - Can Anyone Make it?

On the posting forum was a question about kickers in Southern Nevada. It is for good reason, as this year's crop of kickers has to be among the worst that we have seen in years. Outside of the outstanding kicking of Green Valley's Nolan Kohorst who hit two from 51 and 52 yards as a Junior in their game against Coronado last night. Also,we have sleepers who need some college love by their play.

Lets talk about the obvious situation at Silverado. They have 3 D1 players on their defense and can not find ANYONE who can move the ball on offense. Kyle Simmons last night struggled once again after having a horrible night at poor Liberty last week in a shocking 6-0 loss. Simmons was 9-17 with 2 picks and 68 yards passing. They had 155 yards in total offense for the game! With Palo, Vegas and Del Sol getting that by halftime, you have to wonder who is going to step up? With a defense that is among the best in all of Nevada, Silverado's offense is killing this team. Losing back to back games against Basic and Liberty, the Hawks are going to be sweating to get to the #2 seed in the SE after these poor losses. Skyhawks had only 133 yards in total offense prior to their last scoring drive.

Lets talk about some players who broke out last night. Reggie Bullock took the rock last night and made things happen for Las Vegas. He ended up with 3 first half touchdowns from 8 carries gaining 122 yards. Joining him was Kevin Cormier who added 101 yards on 9 carries. Both of them combined beat the entire Silverado team on yardage. Cheyenne lays the wood to teams that they should beat in a manner that turns heads. Marcus Sullivan ran for over 200 yards and 70 and 16 yard touchdown runs. CM went back to the basics and ran the ball 56 times in their upset win over Arbor View.

Before we get into the sleepers this year, we turn our attention to the kicking game- if you can call what Southern Nevada teams are actually doing this year. On Friday night, Southern Nevada teams missed 27 extra points and also missed on 7 2 point coversions. Much of these 2 point conversions were after missed extra points. Thank goodness that we are not getting punting or kickoff statistics. Cheyenne has clearly shown that they can not kick. Mark my words this will hurt them in the playoffs. This is what Green Valley's kicker Kohorst did on Friday that much special. Since the Jaekle brothers left Bonanza, we have not seen a weapon like the big footed kicker from Green Valley. Order the extra ALL State patch for him this year,as the competition is over right now!

Del Sol put on a clinic with their offensive line with a whopping 271 yards of offense vs Liberty's meager 95 at the Half! Hall ends up with over 219 carries on 17 tries! The Dragons gained over 400 yards of total offense! Chaz Thomas of Palo hit the Bulldogs of Centennial with 247 on 16 carries! They had close to 500 yards of total offense! Teams on missions that is for sure.

If you can not run the football this year, few in Southern Nevada are lighting up an offense through the air. So if you can not run and can not kick, you are in trouble in the South. Scoreboard!
