Nevada Athletes Making An Impact in College

Give some props to CJ Watson, the former Gorman Gael who has stuck it out in the D League and after nearly making the San Antonio Spurs in training camp, as he signed with the Golden State Warriors. CJ just needs to give up the rock and get out of the way from those scorers! Lets talk about local kids in the bowl games. Congrats to Andrew Hatch for the LSU National Title - Cimarron former QB.

Hatch went from Harvard to LSU thanks to keeping up with former BYU Coach Gary Crowton who is now the O Coordinator for LSU. What an experience for a local kid to have!

Caught up with Jon Monga from Foothill and Ben Jacobs of Silverado at the Humanitarian Bowl in Boise with the Fresno State Bulldogs. Monga talked about the trash talking that goes on in the locker room among the Bulldog Northern Nevada players after the State title. With former McQueen Lancers Clint Stitser and Charles Tolbert playing minutes for the Dogs, both took some ribbing after the Lancers lost to Gorman for the State title.

Jacobs and Monga talked about how the Fresno community really gets behind their football team and how UNLV lacks that community feeling from people backing the program. Ben is studying Kinesiology and hopes to return to Vegas after graduating. However, after starting as a Redshirt Freshman he has the chance to shoot for higher goals of the NFL after a fine year. Stitser also is going to be given a chance to go to some NFL camps after his fine career at FSU.

Both Monga and Jacobs are rooting for more local kids to make their way to Fresno. They were excited about Taylor Knowles of Coronado being recruited by FSU. They both felt that UNLV was inconsistant in their recruiting efforts towards them while they were in town. They would call only every once in a while, but Fresno was all over both of them.

Both said that UNLV being late in recruiting them hurt the Rebels chances of landing them.

Lets hope for the UNLV Football program that a few of the stars of Las Vegas - hello Corbin Brown and Reveon Samuels can be landed by the Rebels.

Kudos on the hoops front for Billy White and Lorenzo Wade of San Diego State. White has been a force now starting for the Aztecs coming from GV. Wade is polished from his Louisville experience coming in from prep school and Cheyenne. Also props to Hank Thorns of Valley leading the ACC in assist to turnover ratio as a pure Freshman at VA TECH. Heiden Ratner is getting big minutes coming from Silverado to James Madison. JM is having a great bounceback season after struggling last year. Also, you have to tune in to watch Italee Lucas play for North Carolina. The Centennial Star is faboulous as a pure Freshman for the Tar Heels. To see a local player play at such a high level is great to see.
