St. Joe's Holds No. 21 In National Poll

In this week's National Football Top 25, <b>No. 3 Independence (N.C.)</b> won its 70th consecutive game by beating Central Cabarrus (N.C.). Meanwhile, <b>No. 16 Everett (Mass.)</b> extended its winning streak to 30 games.



Rankings as of Oct. 24, 2004

1. Southlake Carroll (Southlake, Texas) – (8-0) *1
Last Game: Defeated Keller, 33-18.
Notes: Much has been said about the Southlake Carroll offense this season, but the Dragons' defense came up big in their win over Keller. Southlake Carroll limited Keller's rushing attack to just 24 yards on the ground and held Keller's offense to zero points in the second half after Keller had held an 18-17 halftime lead. The Dragons earned their 28th consecutive regular season victory with the win.

2. Bellevue (Bellevue, Wash.) – (7-0) *2
Last Game: Defeated Interlake, 48-7.
Notes: Bellevue senior running back J.R. Hasty rushed for 134 yards and four touchdowns to help the Wolverines to a big win over Interlake. Hasty, who now has 26 touchdowns on the season, led a ground attack that racked up 436 yards, while sophomore quarterback Eric Block completed 4-of-7 passes for 97 yards and two touchdowns.

3. Independence (Charlotte, N.C.) – (8-0) *3
Last Game: Defeated Central Cabarrus, 63-13.
Notes: Independence won its 70th straight game in its victory over Central Cabarrus. Senior wide receiver Mohamed Massaquoi hauled in 10 receptions for 231 yards and five touchdowns and senior quarterback Joe Cox completed 21-of-24 passes for 423 yards and six touchdowns.

4. Mission Viejo (Mission Viejo, Calif.) – (7-0) *4
Last Game: Defeated Trabuco Hills, 49-6.
Notes: Mission Viejo junior fullback Chane Moline rushed for 129 yards and four touchdowns and had three receptions for 53 yards to lead Mission Viejo to a convincing victory over Trabuco Hills. Meanwhile, senior quarterback Mark Sanchez completed 10-of-15 passes for 216 yards and three touchdowns and junior tight end Konrad Reuland caught four passes for 90 yards and two touchdowns.

5. Central Catholic (Pittsburgh, Pa.) – (9-0) *5
Last Game: Defeated Baldwin, 16-14.
Notes: Quarterback Shane Murray threw two touchdown passes to Charlie Totten as Central Catholic squeaked by Baldwin. Running back Eugene Jarvis added 67 yards on the ground.

6. Colerain (Cincinnati, Ohio) – (9-0) *6
Last Game: Defeated Oak Hills, 56-0.
Notes: Colerain senior quarterback Dominick Goodman caused problems for Oak Hills with both his arm and his legs by rushing for 83 yards and three touchdowns and passing for 109 yards and a touchdown. Junior fullback Terrence Sherrer and senior fullback Mister Simpson each had two touchdown runs.

7. Lockport (Lockport, Ill.) – (9-0) *7
Last Game: Defeated Sandburg, 14-13.
Notes: Senior quarterback Jake Christensen had an 8-yard touchdown run with 1:13 remaining and senior kicker Matt Ludwig kicked the extra point to allow Lockport to escape with a narrow win over Sandburg. It was the second straight close win for the Porters, who defeated Homewood-Flossmoor, 20-14, last week. Lockport will host Lincoln-Way East in the first round of the Class 8A playoffs on Oct. 29.

8. John Curtis (River Ridge, La.) – (7-0) *8
Last Game: Defeated Vandebilt Catholic, 51-14.
Notes: Curtis accumulated 301 yards on the ground and got two touchdown runs from senior running back Kirk Bush to cruise past Vandebilt Catholic.

9. Armwood (Seffner, Fla.) – (7-0) *9
Last Game: Defeated Middleton, 27-7.
Notes: Senior running back Kalvin Bailey rushed for 146 yards and three touchdowns on 19 carries and Armwood head coach Sean Callahan earned his 100th victory as the Hawks defeated Middleton. Armwood can clinch its district title with a win over Plant on Oct. 29.

10. Lufkin (Lufkin, Texas) – (8-0) *10
Last Game: Defeated Huntsville, 50-27.
Notes: Lufkin had 464 yards of total offense, including 335 rushing yards, while senior running back Jorvorskie Lane rushed for 160 yards and three touchdowns on 17 carries to lead the Panthers' offensive attack against Huntsville.

11. Sacred Heart-Griffin (Springfield, Ill.) – (9-0) *11
Last Game: Defeated Jerseyville, 49-0.
Notes: Senior running back Curtis Robinson dominated Jerseyville for 312 rushing yards and five touchdowns to lead Sacred Heart-Griffin to its 28th consecutive regular season win. The Cyclones will play Jerseyville again in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs on Oct. 29.

12. Centennial (Peoria, Ariz.) – (8-0) *12
Last Game: Defeated Shadow Mountain, 63-7.
Notes: Centennial junior Tim House starred on both sides of the ball for the Coyotes, as he rushed for 129 yards and three touchdowns and returned an interception 75 yards for another score. Senior quarterback Joe Caskey completed 6-of-9 passes for 162 yards and three touchdowns, while the Centennial defense forced five turnovers.

13. Camden County (Kingsland, Ga.) – (9-0) *13
Last Game: Defeated Johnson-Savannah, 71-0.
Notes: The Wildcats, who have won 24 consecutive games, earned their fourth shutout of the season by crushing Johnson-Savannah. Camden County will look to finish the regular season undefeated when it plays at Bradwell Institute on Oct. 29.

14. Jenks (Jenks, Okla.) – (7-0) *14
Last Game: Defeated Muskogee, 47-30.
Notes: Jenks senior quarterback Andrew Brewer completed 9-of-23 passes for 190 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 160 yards and a touchdown to lead the Trojans to their 17th straight win.

15. LaGrange (LaGrange, Ga.) – (9-0) *15
Last Game: Defeated Harris County, 44-0.
Notes: Senior wide receiver Demoreo Ford, who committed to Kentucky last week, caught five passes for 90 yards and three touchdowns in LaGrange's win over Harris County. The Grangers will travel to face rival Troup County on Oct. 29.

16. Everett (Everett, Mass.) – (5-0) *16
Last Game: Defeated Arlington, 42-8.
Notes: Everett senior quarterback Matt Nuzzo completed a 19-yard touchdown pass to Jim Felix to become the school's all-time leader in touchdown passes with 28. The Crimson Tide's win over Arlington was its 30th consecutive victory.

17. Hoover (Hoover, Ala.) – (8-0) *17
Last Game: Defeated Oak Mountain, 38-20.
Notes: The Buccaneers clinched the Class 6A, Region 6 title with their win over Oak Mountain. Quarterback Jarod Bryant completed 17-of-27 passes for 244 yards and threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Mason Dueitt.

18. Katy (Katy, Texas) – (8-0) *18
Last Game: Defeated Elsik, 31-7.
Notes: Senior running back James Aston rushed for 160 yards and three touchdowns on 30 carries to lead Katy to its 23rd straight win. The Tigers will travel to play Cinco Ranch (8-0) on Oct. 30.

19. South Panola (Batesville, Miss.) – (9-0) *19
Last Game: Defeated Southaven, 48-16.
Notes: Germichael Sanford ran for three touchdowns to lead South Panola.

20. Southern Durham (Durham, N.C.) – (8-0) *20
Last Game: Defeated Webb, 55-7.
Notes: Southern Durham quarterback Kevin Atkins completed 15-of-21 passes for 217 yards and a touchdown and ran for a team-high 55 yards and another score to help the Spartans crush Webb. Southern Durham held Webb to 19 yards in the first half and allowed just a touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

21. St. Joseph Regional (Montvale, N.J.) – (7-0) *21
Last Game: Defeated Passaic, 41-0.
Notes: Senior Brent Weiss had 235 passing yards and two touchdowns while senior twins Jason and Devin McCourty each had two touchdowns to lead St. Joseph Regional.

22. Maine South (Park Ridge, Ill.) – (9-0) *22
Last Game: Defeated Waukegan, 56-14.
Notes: Junior quarterback Tyler Knight rushed for 129 yards and 1 TD on three carries and completed 9-of-18 passes for 87 yards. Backup quarterback Vince Kovacs also had a stellar day by completing 11-of-16 passes for 134 yards and two touchdowns. Knight has filled in for injured star signal caller Sean Price, who is expected back when the Hawks host Niles West in the opening round of the Class 8A state playoffs on Oct. 30.

23. Good Counsel (Wheaton, Md.) – (8-0) *23
Last Game: Defeated Gonzaga, 42-7.
Notes: Good Counsel showed no letdown from last week's win over then-No. 10 DeMatha by dismantling Gonzaga.

24. Union (Tulsa, Okla.) – (7-1) *24
Last Game: Defeated Northwest Classen, 45-10.
Notes: Union crushed Northwest Classen for its sixth straight win.

25. Los Alamitos (Los Alamitos, Calif.) – (6-1) *25
Last Game: Defeated Edison, 31-24, in double overtime.
Notes: Los Alamitos running back Cortes Rice scored on a 13-yard run on the first possession of double overtime for what proved to be the winning score. The Griffins defense stopped Edison on 4th-and-3 from the five-yard line to secure the victory. Rice finished with 180 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries, while senior wide receiver Jeremy Childs caught 16 passes for 169 yards and two touchdowns.
