Blair Topped By South Kent In Title Game

Forty (40) points from Blair Academy's Shamari Spears wasn't enough to stop South Kent in the Boys Club Tournament. He and a teammate were named to the all-tournament team.

After trailing Northfield Mount Hermon (MA) by 13 at the half in Friday's semifinals of the Boys Club Tournament in New York City, South Kent's prospects of a title grab looked bleak. But theConnecticut prep school stormed back for an overtime win and Andray Blatche and crew would leave little to chance with a resounding 89-61 championship game victory over Blair Academy (NJ) on Saturday.

Paced by Tournament MVP Blatche's 24 points and 19 from junior Rob Thomas, Raphael Chillious's group overwhelmed Blair with their size, athleticism, and depth.

Shamari Spears, Blair's 6-foot-5, 230 pound junior power forward, did everything in his power to keep his team afloat, hitting for 40 points and showing a masterful touch from mid-range. However, there was little he could do to prevent Blair from plunging into an early deficit, as they fell behind by 20 at the half.

South Kent also got a strong effort from 6-foot-8, 210 pound small forward Matthew Amaning-Bryan. The sophomore showed good quickness, the ability to handle it in transition, and was active around the hoop.

South Kent advanced to the finals by knocking off Redemption Christian Academy of Troy, New York in the opening round on Friday afternoon, and then clawed their way back for the overtime win over Northfield.

Blair's path to finals included a 69-64 win over the Berkshire School in the opening round, followed by a win over Lawrenceville (NJ) in the semifinals.

Northfield Mount Hermon took the title in the consolation bracket, knocking off Lawrenceville 62-55. Colin McIntosh paced Northfield with 15 points, while Alvin Lewis added 12. 6-foot-5, 220 pound wing guard / forward Johnathan Dixon, a senior, led Lawrenceville with 19 points, while Northwestern commit Craig Moore added 11 points.

In the West bracket, St. Mark's School of Southborough, Massachusetts captured the title by defeating the Brunswick School of Greenwich, Connecticut in the finals. Senior wing guard Paul Rowe was named MVP for St. Mark's. He was joined on the all-tournament team by sophomore wing forward Tommy Hubbard.
