Spring Football Outlook: Rio Rancho Head Coach David Howes
What made you want to get into coaching? When I had to stop playing I was asked by a former coach to get into coaching and I thought "well its still football." I started on the Varsity level and it just stuck in my core.
Which coach was the biggest influence in your life? It was probably a Wrestling Coach when I was a student at Cibola HS, his name is Joe Vivian. I had many mentors in football but I never wrestled, no matter how many time he asked, and he still treated me like I was one of his. That had a profound influence on me. I never had a chance to thank him.
In your opinion who is the best coach and best overall program in the state of New Mexico? That would be a toss up between Eric Roanhaus (Clovis), Jim Bradley (Mayfield), Jim Miller (Las Cruces), Cooper Henderson (Artesia), Sam Jernigan (Goddard HS), and Aaron Ocampo (Centennial, LC). Each one of these coaches brings something special to the game but there are plenty of great coaches in NM. Mayfield is the top program when it comes to consistency and longevity but again there are many great programs around here that have been consistent and at the top of the pack- Artesia, Aztec, Goddard, Clovis, Manzano, and La Cueva.
Looking at last season, what were you most proud of? I am proud of the fight in our players and their mindset of being winners.
Which seniors will be hardest to replace this season? Seniors are always tough to replace. I don't like individualizing them in regards to "importance."
What is your biggest priority this offseason? Improve our football IQ, Strength, and quickness.
Which team in your section would you consider to be the favorite at this point in the offseason? I think Las Cruces brings back a great group of kids and Cleveland is still undefeated. This will be a dogfight to the end and there are 7-8 dogs in that fight.
What are your goals for your football team next season? Win
