Region:  Northern District AAA

Last Year's Record:  3-8

1st year head coach Simon Ocampo sits down and talks with NewMexicoInsider about this upcoming season.  Coach what are your expectations for this year?

Coach Ocampo:  I expect our guys to do what they are coached to do.  If that happens we should be able to compete and win our share of games throughout the season.  Also, I am the 9th head coach here in 12 seasons; I think it's real important that we bring some consistency to this program and to these kids.  Right now who are your top five players that people need to watch out for next season?

Coach Ocampo: People need to really be on the look out for Jason Martinez OL/DE, Nate Zamora RB, Jerome Deaguero OL/DE, Travis Leyba Ath and Ruben Romero LB/FB  Who do you feel is the favorite to win your region?

Coach Ocampo:  I really think our region is as good as any region in all of New Mexico.  Robertson won it last year and they are in our region.  Right now I would say they are the favorite in our region.  They lost a ton of seniors from last year, but they are still loaded, plus they are really well coached.  What have you guys been doing to prepare for next season?

Coach Ocampo:  Well our school has never lifted weights before in the off season.  So we had to change the atmosphere around here and we have gotten better at that kind of stuff.  This summer we are averaging 33 kids a day in the weight room and at our practice sessions.  We get together Monday thru Thursday's from 5:30 till about 7:00.  We also participated in several 7 on 7 type tournaments and hosted a tournament ourselves.  We also are having a "Young Buck" camp this weekend.  What can we expect from your team from an offensive standpoint?

Coach Ocampo:  We are going to get what we can, when we can.  I learned a long time ago that in coaching you really have to leave your pride at the door and just do what ever it takes to win ball games.  We will use lots of formations and motions and see if we can put the defense in situations that favor us and the things we do well.  But the bottom line for us is scoring points, so how ever we can score points we will.  What can we expect from your team from a defensive standpoint?

Coach Ocampo:  Well I'm a defensive guy having played linebacker in college at New Mexico State.  So I love this side of the ball.  Last season as a defensive coordinator I wanted to run a 4-3 cover 2 scheme.  Problem was we didn't really have the personal needed to run that type of system.  So we ended up going to a 3-3-5 scheme and we had some success with that.  I spent a lot of time with Coach Rocky Long from New Mexico recently so we are going to incorporate some of their 3-4 scheme that they use.  What is your overall outlook for your team this season?

Coach Ocampo:  You know right now it's kind of tough for me to say, because this is my 1st year.  But I am very excited about this upcoming season.  I know we have some guys on our team that will lay it all on the line for us this year.  We preach to our kids that no one will work harder than us.  Because of that mentality we should be able to compete and win some ball games.  We always talk about if a team beats us it's because they are just a better team, but it won't be because they work harder than us during the week or during the off season.  Our non region schedule is favorable but like I said before our region is as good as anyone so we need to be ready when we get into region play.

NewMexicoInsider would like to thank Coach Simon Ocampo for this time and all of this help with this preview.  We want to wish him and all of his Elk players the best of luck this upcoming season.
