Los Alamos vs. Aztec

If Los Alamos is going to pull off the upset the ground game of the Hilltoppers will need to have a monster night.

Los Alamos vs. Aztec
We are now in round 2 of the state playoffs and we have some very interesting matchups this week.  Los Alamos goes on the road to take on the high powered high octane offense of Aztec.

Aztec comes into this game as the #2 seed in the playoffs; however we have been ranking them #1 for a few weeks now.  Aztec does everything well.  Offensively they have been nearly unstoppable averaging an amazing 50 points a game.  That is hard to do at any level against any kind of opponent.  QB Bryscon King has been nothing short of spectacular; statistically speaking he has been as good as any sophomore QB in recent state history.  He is averaging 335 yards a game this year.  RB Mike Hathcock can run the rock; he is averaging 166 yards per game right now and does enough to keep teams honest and away from their pass game.  The WR trio of Trev Hammagren, Jermaine Geter and Derrick Williamson are studs.  If either one of these three gets the ball in the open field forget about it.  As good as they have been on offense; their defense has been just as impressive.  LB Brad Elliot will be up for all state type honors after the season.

Los Alamos has talent of their own to play with Aztec.  In all honesty, the best overall college prospect on the field this weekend will be Los Alamos RB Raul Rodriguez.  Rodriguez can flat out fly, he has been bothered by injuries this season but he is feeling good right now and needs to be healthy in order for the Hilltoppers to pull off the upset.  QB Zach Mang is pretty good and does enough to keep the defense honest, but he is also a threat to run the football.  As a runner he is a good enough athlete that he can be a dangerous runner in the open field.  IN defense Blaine Lattin and Thomas Lebrun have been the main players this year.

On paper Aztec should win this way going away, but the fact that Los Alamos loves to run the football could make this game a little closer than most people think.  If the Hilltoppers can run the football and keep that high powered offense of Aztec on the sideline, they may have a chance.  Run the football, get first downs, shorten the game and see if you can pull it out in the fourth quarter.  With all that being said, I think Aztec just has to much power this year.  I'll take Aztec 44 Los Alamos 20.
