'09 Year of the RB?

2009 may be the year of the RB in the state of New Mexico. Ronnie Daniels, Jordan Llamas, Gary Maestas, Marcus Washington, Matt Sandoval, David Vargas, Aaron Huerta and David Broc are all talked about in this piece. Who else did we miss?

2009 the year of the RB?
A few years ago we called the 2007 season the year of the QB.  We did that with good reason.  Artesia legend Landry Jones was heading into his senior season and had just committed to Oklahoma.  In the state of New Mexico that is a huge announcement.  Add in the fact that Mayfield signal caller Matt Sandoval was going for three straight titles, Cibola's Jon Mader was getting D1 interest and ended up signing with New Mexico, and you can understand our reasoning.

If 2007 was the year of the QB, can 2009 be the year of the RB?  You can make that claim when you consider just how many talented runners will be returning next season.  The following is a small example of the talent that will be in the backfield.

Jordan Llamas – Manzano
Llamas had a big sophomore season and an equally impressive junior year.  Llamas has good size and should be one of the top runners next season.  He could also end up being a scholarship type player with his combination of size and speed.

Gary Maestas – Eldorado
Maestas burst on the scene in '08 with over 1400 yards rushing and helping his team get to the state title.  He will be counted on even more in '09 and with a good QB in Armin Day; teams won't be able to stack the box against him.  He could push for 1700 yards next season.

Ronnie Daniels – La Cueva
Daniels will only be a junior next season but he is arguably the top overall prospect in the state regardless of class.  He has really good size at 6'2 190 and good speed to take it the distance.  Look for him to have a monster season in '09.

Marcus Washington – Sandia
Washington had a big junior season that was cut short because of injury.  He is expected to be fully recovered next season and he should put up impressive numbers once again.

David Vargas – Cibola
Vargas is more of a grinder and will wear you down defensively.  He is tough as nails and runs with that same mentality.  He isn't the fastest runner around but he has enough speed to rip off huge gains.

Jacob Olivas – Artesia
So much was expected of Olivas in '08 but he missed the entire season with an injury.  He had a big second half of the season as a sophomore.  If he is healthy he could end up being a legit candidate for all state type honors.

David Broc – Los Alamos
Every year Los Alamos produces a top notch runner.  A few seasons ago it was Ruben Martinez and last year Raul Rodriguez took the title.  Next year look for David Broc to have a monster year.

Aaron Huerta – Silver
Silver always has those tough kids that are slippery and can make plays in space.  Huerta will be that once again for Silver next season.  He earned several honors after the season was over and should once again get that type of consideration.

Matt Sandoval – Volcano Vista
Volcano Vista had a good '08 season and is expecting to have an even better season in '09.  One of the reasons is because of the return of Sandoval who rushed for over 1000 yards and earned honors after the season was over.  Look for him to get a ton of carries in '09.

We know we missed several players from around the state.  If we did email me at newmexicoinsider@yahoo.com and we will add them to the list.
