Over the past two seasons, Onate DE/FB Zach Hernandez has established himself as one of the top two way players in New Mexico. Last season, for his 5-5 squad, Hernandez was 2nd Team All-League as a fullback and Honorable Mention as a defensive end. In addition to his skills on the football field, Hernandez is a top student who is interested in studying engineering at the college level. Hernandez' classroom and football abilities have drawn the attention of multiple Ivy League schools and this summer, Hernandez will head east to camp at Brown and Columbia.
On the 28th of June Hernandez will go to Providence, Rhode Island to camp at Brown, last year's Ivy League champs. After returning to New Mexico, Hernandez will once again head east on July 10th to camp at Columbia University. According to Hernandez, both Brown and Columbia would like him to play fullback in college.
In preparation for next season, as well as playing college ball, the 5-11 215 pound Hernandez says he is working hard to improve his speed and quickness. Currently, Hernandez is working out with his Onate teammates, lifiting, running and doing agilities. Regarding his squad, Hernandez says "there is always room for improvement" as they attempt to build on last year's 5-5 record.
