Recruiting Update: John Garcia

St. Pius' John Garcia talks recruiting, camps, combines and more inside... Have you attended any camps and do you plan on attending any in the near future?

Garcia: "I recently attended a combine and was named DB MVP of the event. I didn't do quite as well as I had hoped but still had fun competing and did some things well. I have been invited to a NIKE camp and am still not sure if I will attend. I do know that I will attend UNM's camp, CSU's camp, Air Force's camp and will play the rest by ear. A lot depends on what coaches at certain schools have to say and also what my team's summer schedule looks like."

Last year as a sophomore, you started at both WR and CB. Do you have a favorite position? What are you best at?

Well, to be honest I feel most confident at RB. I have played the position my whole life ( up until last year)and it feels very natural there. However, I just love being on the field and have really enjoyed playing and learning the receiver position. Corner is fun because I get to hit people and that's something I enjoy. So to answer, your question: I feel I'm best at RB but enjoy all three positions very much.

What do you feel is your best attribute as a player?

It would have to be either my quickness or my work ethic. I'm gonna go with my work ethic because there are other kids who are really quick and fast but very few who are willing to work as hard as I do.

What is the thing you need to work on most?

I tend to be really hard on myself. I love winning and want to be the best at everything I do. I'm really working on just enjoying myself more and letting things happen.

Name a few teammates who people should watch at Pius.

Isaac Leon 6'0, 215 LB/FB Sr., Esteban Apodaca 6'1, 190 DE/OL Sr., Ian Maloney 5'11, 160 WR/FS Sr., Quintin Rizek 6'2, 190 LB/WR Jr., Nathan Otero 6'2, 240 OL/DL Sr.

Do you have any favorite schools? Have any schools extended a scholarship offer?

New Mexico, Air Force, New Mexico State, Oklahoma, TCU, Stanford are schools that I really like a lot right now. However, I'm interested in any school that takes the time to recruit me and really am wide open at this point. No schools have extended offers yet.

What are your goals for next season?

First goal is to win a state championship and to do everything in my power to help my team. I know that if I work hard individual goals take care of themselves and that without my team no individual goals are possible. So for now, I just want to get better and help my team get better.

PrepNewMexico had the opportunity to watch Garcia work out and run through football drills. He did not disappoint and flashed speed, quickness, ball skills and looks to have the frame to hold another 30-40 pounds. ( Currently 5'10, 160) We also had the chance to watch teammate Isaac Leon and will give readers a recruiting update on the 2011 prospect in the coming weeks.
