Sledge Delivers Hammer In Key Third Quarter

Reporter Mike Sullivan spent his afternoon watching Tavon Sledge uphold his big reputation with an explosive third quarter to lead his team with a Suffolk County playoff victory at home ...

Tavon Sledge has a reputation as being one of the toughest guards to defend near the rim. He upheld this especially in the third quarter of yesterday's 71-56 victory for Half Hollow Hills West over a very tough Central Islip team in a Suffolk County playoff battle.

Sledge, who will play at Iowa State next season, scored 12 of his game-high 31 points in the key third quarter. Central Islip had gained an eight-point lead and then Sledge took over with an assortment of drives. When the fourth quarter started, the eight-point deficit was turned into an 11-point advantage.

Central Islip, led by Reginald Augustus's 23 points, spurted out to an early 19-12 lead after the first eight minutes of play. Central Islip maintained a narrow 30-29 lead at the half.

The continued solid play of Central Islip near the basket pushed the advantage to eight before Sledge and senior teammate Emile Blackman helped turn the momentum around. Blackman produced some pretty baskets near the rim, scoring 22 points.

The next round of games is at Stony Brook next week.
