Big Man Prospect Has Some D-1 Interest

Reporter Mike Sullivan provides a look at the individual game at a senior big man prospect from Our Savior New American in Centereach, New York ...

Daouda Soumaoro, a 6-foot-10, 220-pound power forward/center from Our Savior New American in Centereach, New York, is a player the coaching staff has been excited about since he came to their school.

Soumaoro is a big man who has gained more and more knowledge about the American style of play under head coach Ron Steltzer's Pioneer's boy's basketball program over the past year.

Soumaoro, who comes from Mali, Africa, has averaged 12 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks per contest this year.

THOUGHTS ON DAOUDA'S PROGRESS:

Daouda has made the adjustment to game of basketball here very well and it was helped along by the coaching and scheduling skills of OSNA assistant coach Eric Jaklitsch, who has done a smart job in getting his big man some ample competition during the summer months.

HIS SUMMER AT AAU EVENTS:

We previously watched him in July while covering the Super Showcase at Disney World in Orlando, Florida. He played with Jim Hart's highly regarded Albany City Rocks AAU boy's basketball program. "He has a great deal of upside," said Hart. "I like the way he fights on the glass too."

DESCRIPTION OF SOUMAORO'S INDIVIDUAL GAME:

He has the ability to rebound on both ends of the court and defend with purpose. We previously watched him compete with Jim Hart's Albany City Rocks AAU program during the July evaluation period down in Disney World.

According to OSNA assistant coach Eric Jaklitsch, the talented prospect came to the United States in November of last year. Since he has arrived on our shores, Soumaoro has gained 30 pounds.

OSNA ASSISTANT COACH ERIC JAKLITSCH ON THE BIG MAN'S GAME:

Daouda does several things well on the court, including getting on the glass, blocking and altering shots with his long arms and progressing with a nice touch near the basket.
