CBA Holds At 20 In Top 25

In this week's National Football Top 25, No. 1 Southlake Carroll (Texas) opened the playoffs with a resounding victory over Irving (Texas). Meanwhile, No. 5 Central Catholic (Pa.) advanced to the WPIAL Class AAAA championship against Gateway (Pa.).



Rankings as of Nov. 14, 2004

1. Southlake Carroll (Southlake, Texas) – (11-0) *1
Last Game: Defeated Irving, 49-13, in the Class 5A Division II, Region I bi-district round.
Notes: Senior quarterback Chase Daniel completed 23-of-28 passes for 401 yards and six touchdowns and junior wide receiver Clint Renfro had seven catches for 153 yards and four touchdowns as Southlake Carroll advanced. The Dragons will play Allen in the Class 5A Division II, Region I area round on Nov. 20.

2. Bellevue (Bellevue, Wash.) – (10-0) *2
Last Game: Defeated Franklin Pierce, 38-7, in the first round of the Class 3A state playoffs.
Notes: Senior running back J.R. Hasty ran for three touchdowns to lead Bellevue past the first round of the state playoffs with a convincing win over Franklin Pierce. It was the Wolverines' 20th consecutive win overall. Bellevue will play Timberline in the Class 3A state quarterfinals on Nov. 19. Timberline features senior running back Jonathan Stewart, who is rated the No. 4 running back and No. 10 overall recruit in the Class of 2005 by SchoolSports.com.

3. Independence (Charlotte, N.C.) – (11-0) *3
Last Game: Defeated East Forsyth, 60-14, in the first round of the Class 4AA state playoffs.
Notes: The Patriots won their 73rd consecutive game and advanced in the state playoffs thanks to six touchdown passes by senior quarterback Joe Cox and five touchdown receptions by senior wide receiver Mohamed Massaquoi. Independence passed Hudson (Mich.) for the second longest winning streak in U.S. history. The Patriots will play Grimsley in the second round of the Class 4AA state playoffs on Nov. 19.

4. Mission Viejo (Mission Viejo, Calif.) – (10-0) *4
Last Game: Defeated Dana Hills, 42-10.
Notes: The Diablos crushed Dana Hills to win their fifth straight outright South Coast League title. It was also the fourth consecutive time that Mission Viejo finished the regular season undefeated. Senior quarterback Mark Sanchez led the way against Dana Hills, completing 12-of-18 passes for 181 yards and three touchdowns. Meanwhile, junior fullback Chane Moline ran for 100 yards (125 yards on seven carries) for the seventh time this season and scored three total touchdowns. Mission Viejo opens the CIF Division II Southern Section playoffs at home against Los Osos on Nov. 19.

5. Central Catholic (Pittsburgh, Pa.) – (12-0) *5
Last Game: Defeated Upper St. Clair, 20-12, in the WPIAL Class AAAA semifinals.
Notes: Senior running back Eugene Jarvis ran for 178 yards and two touchdowns on 31 carries and added a touchdown reception as Central Catholic edged past previously unbeaten Upper St. Clair (11-1). The Vikings will play Gateway in the WPIAL Class AAAA championship on Nov. 20. Central Catholic defeated Gateway, 28-20, in the season opener. Gateway features senior running back/defensive back Justin King, who is rated the No. 9 overall recruit in the Class of 2005 by SchoolSports.com.

6. Colerain (Cincinnati, Ohio) – (12-0) *6
Last Game: Defeated Centerville, 35-0, in the Division I, Region 4 semifinals.
Notes: Senior fullback Mister Simpson ran for 194 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries to lead Colerain to a rout over Centerville. The Cardinals will play Moeller in the Division I, Region 4 finals on Nov. 20.

7. John Curtis (River Ridge, La.) – (10-0) *7
Last Game: Defeated Eunice, 50-13, in the Class 4A bi-district round.
Notes: Sophomore Joe McKnight returned a punt 75 yards for a touchdown and added another score on a 42-yard touchdown run as John Curtis cruised past Eunice. Senior Kirk Bush also scored two touchdowns for the Patriots, who will host Plaquemine in the regional round of the Class 4A state playoffs.

8. Lufkin (Lufkin, Texas) – (11-0) *8
Last Game: Defeated Waco, 38-21, in the Class 5A Division II, Region II bi-district round.
Notes: Senior running back Jorvorskie Lane rushed for 89 yards and three touchdowns and senior quarterback Jacovey Smallwood completed 11-of-17 passes for 201 yards and two touchdowns to guide the Panthers past Waco. Lufkin will play Pflugerville in the Class 5A Division II, Region II area round on Nov. 20.

9. Armwood (Seffner, Fla.) – (9-1) *9
Last Game: Defeated Countryside, 35-13, in the Class 4A Region 3 quarterfinals.
Notes: Senior fullback Kalvin Bailey rumbled his way for 271 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 35 carries in Armwood's win over Countryside. The Hawks will host Mariner in the Class 4A Region 3 semifinals on Nov. 19.

10. Centennial (Peoria, Ariz.) – (11-0) *11
Last Game: Defeated McClintock, 49-7, in the first round of the Class 4A state playoffs.
Notes: Senior quarterback Joe Caskey completed 6-of-9 passes for 132 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 110 yards and a touchdown on eight carries as Centennial crushed McClintock. Junior Tim House added three touchdowns, including one on a 44-yard punt return. The Coyotes will host Chaparral in the Class 4A state quarterfinals on Nov. 19.

11. Camden County (Kingsland, Ga.) – (12-0) *12
Last Game: Defeated Starr's Mill, 21-0, in the second round of the Class AAAAA state playoffs.
Notes: Camden County was held to 173 total yards and gave up 145 rushing yards to Starr's Mill, but the Wildcats still managed to come away with their 27th consecutive win. The Wildcats earned their seventh shutout of the season in the process. Camden County quarterback Ben Greer led the offense with two touchdown passes and a touchdown run. The Wildcats will play Cherokee in the Class AAAAA state quarterfinals on Nov. 19.

12. Jenks (Jenks, Okla.) – (10-0) *12
Last Game: Defeated Ponca City, 42-17, in the first round of the Class 6A state playoffs.
Notes: Jenks dominated Ponca City's defense to the tune of 497 total yards. Senior quarterback Andrew Brewer threw for 241 yards and three touchdowns and senior running back Freddie Carolina ran for three scores. The Trojans will host Westmoore in the Class 6A state quarterfinals on Nov. 19.

13. LaGrange (LaGrange, Ga.) – (12-0) *13
Last Game: Defeated Crisp County, 28-0, in the second round of the Class AAA state playoffs.
Notes: Marshall Sheppard gained 138 rushing yards and scored three touchdowns on just 10 carries and the Grangers' defense held Crisp County to minus-36 rushing yards en route to the shutout win. LaGrange will play Carrollton in the Class AAA quarterfinals on Nov. 19.

14. Everett (Everett, Mass.) – (8-0) *14
Last Game: Defeated Malden, 36-7.
Notes: The Crimson Tide won their 33rd consecutive game thanks to two touchdowns each from seniors Matt Nuzzo (one rushing, one throwing) and Justin Sullivan (two rushing). Everett will travel to play Cambridge Rindge & Latin for the Greater Boston League title on Nov. 25.

15. Hoover (Hoover, Ala.) – (11-0) *15
Last Game: Defeated Grissom, 47-19, in the first round of the Class 6A state playoffs.
Notes: Hoover gained 446 total yards, including 322 passing yards, to crush Grissom for a first-round playoff victory. The Buccaneers will travel to face John Carroll in the second round of the Class 6A state playoffs on Nov. 19.

16. South Panola (Batesville, Miss.) – (12-0) *16
Last Game: Defeated Grenada, 33-6, in the first round of the Class 5A state playoffs.
Notes: The Tigers won their 27th straight game by cruising past Grenada in the first round. South Panola will host Madison Central in the Class 5A state quarterfinals on Nov. 19.

17. Southern Durham (Durham, N.C.) – (11-0) *17
Last Game: Defeated Asheboro, 48-6, in the first round of the Class 3AA state playoffs.
Notes: Southern Durham racked up 384 yards on the ground with senior Charles Gamble gaining 164 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries to pummel Asheboro and advance to the second round of the Class 3AA state playoffs on Nov. 19.

18. Maine South (Park Ridge, Ill.) – (12-0) *18
Last Game: Defeated Stevenson, 46-15, in the Class 8A, Quadrant A final.
Notes: Junior Jake Bachmeier gained 231 all-purpose yards and scored three touchdowns and senior Andy Cupp ran for two scores as Maine South scored 38 unanswered points to pull away from Stevenson. The Hawks will play Warrenville South in the Class 8A state semifinals on Nov. 20.

19. Good Counsel (Wheaton, Md.) – (11-0) *19
Last Game: Defeated Gonzaga, 42-7, in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference semifinals.
Notes: The Falcons dominated Gonzaga on both sides of the ball to advance to the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference title game against DeMatha on Nov. 21. The Falcons defeated DeMatha, 31-21, on Oct. 15. In the win over Gonzaga, the Falcons forced five turnovers and recorded five sacks, including two by senior Tommy Galt, who also had two fumble recoveries. Offensively, Good Counsel was led by junior Sean Parrott, who rushed for 127 yards and two touchdowns, and senior Jerron Pearson, who added 101 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

20. Christian Brothers Academy (Syracuse, N.Y.) – (11-0) *20
Last Game: Defeated Binghamton, 48-16, in the Class AA state quarterfinals.
Notes: Senior quarterback Greg Paulus completed 23-of-33 passes for 366 yards and a touchdown and broke his own state record for passing yards in a season with 3,085. Paulus threw for 3,019 yards in 2002. Christian Brothers will play Webster Thomas in the Class AA state semifinals on Nov. 20.

21. North Shore (Galena Park, Texas) – (11-0) *21
Last Game: Defeated Pearland, 35-30, in the Class 5A Division I, Region III bi-district round.
Notes: Senior running back Clifford Gilliam ran for 280 yards and five touchdowns on 20 carries and the North Shore defense held off a late charge from Pearland to advance. The Mustangs will play Westfield in the Class 5A Division I, Region III semifinals on Nov. 20.

22. Joliet Catholic (Joliet, Ill.) – (12-0) *22
Last Game: Defeated Fenwick, 35-0, in the Class 5A Quadrant A finals.
Notes: Chris Clancy ran for 100 yards and three touchdowns and Joe Benson rushed for 122 yards and a touchdown as Joliet Catholic gained 291 yards on the ground against Fenwick. The Hilltoppers will face Jacksonville in the Class 5A state semifinals on Nov. 20.

23. Pasco (Pasco, Wash.) – (11-0) *23
Last Game: Defeated University, 49-6, in the Class 4A Eastern Regional; Defeated Walla Walla, 49-10, in the first round of the Class 4A state playoffs.
Notes: Pasco ran for 392 yards and seven touchdowns on 35 carries against University in the Class 4A Eastern Regional. Senior running back Leon Jackson led the way, rushing for 181 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries. In the win over Walla Walla, Tony Coburn ran for 161 yards and three touchdowns on eight carries and Jackson added 139 yards and three scores on 10 carries. The Bulldogs will play Bethel in the Class 4A state quarterfinals on Nov. 20.

24. Union (Tulsa, Okla.) – (10-1) *24
Last Game: Defeated Owasso, 48-14, in the first round of the Class 6A state playoffs.
Notes: Senior running back Tony Moore ran for 186 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Redskins past Owasso. Union will host Putnam City in the Class 6A state quarterfinals on Nov. 20.

25. Los Alamitos (Los Alamitos, Calif.) – (9-1) *25
Last Game: Defeated Huntington Beach, 42-0.
Notes: Los Alamitos won its eighth consecutive game behind its dangerous passing attack. Senior quarterback Jimmie Barnes passed for 326 yards and four touchdowns and senior wide receiver Jeremy Childs caught seven passes for 195 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Griffins. Los Alamitos opens the CIF Division I Southern Section playoffs against Long Beach Cabrillo on Nov. 19.
