Christian Brothers Moves Up In National Poll

1. Southlake Carroll (Southlake, Texas) – (12-0) *1
Last Game: Defeated Allen, 52-14, in the Class 5A Division II, Region I area round.
Notes: Senior quarterback Chase Daniel completed 14-of-23 passes for 264 yards and four touchdowns and senior wideout Kenton Gedwed hauled in four passes for 125 yards and two touchdowns to lead Southlake Carroll past Allen. The Dragons will face Abilene (12-0) in the Class 5A Division II, Region I semifinals on Nov. 27.
2. Bellevue (Bellevue, Wash.) – (11-0) *2
Last Game: Defeated Timberline, 49-9, in the Class 3A state quarterfinals.
Notes: Bellevue's J.R. Hasty was an unstoppable force against Timberline, as the senior running back rushed for 314 yards and six touchdowns on 16 carries to help the Wolverines advance. In the process, Hasty broke the KingCo Conference season rushing record with 2,240 yards and tied the state record for touchdowns in a season with 45. Timberline's Jonathan Stewart ran for 120 yards on 21 carries in the loss and finished his career as the state's all-time leading rusher with 7,757 yards. Bellevue will play Lynden in the Class 3A state semifinals on Nov. 26.
3. Independence (Charlotte, N.C.) – (12-0) *3
Last Game: Defeated Grimsley, 47-14, in the second round of the Class 4AA state playoffs.
Notes: Joe Cox tossed five touchdown passes and wideouts Mohamed Massaquoi and RaDon Ingram each caught two touchdown passes to lead Independence to its 74th consecutive win. The Patriots will play Northwest Guilford in the Class 4AA state quarterfinals on Nov. 26.
4. Mission Viejo (Mission Viejo, Calif.) – (11-0) *4
Last Game: Defeated Los Osos, 63-10, in the first round of the CIF Division II Southern Section playoffs.
Notes: Junior fullback Chane Moline ran for 150 yards and three touchdowns on 10 carries and senior quarterback Mark Sanchez tossed two touchdown passes as Mission Viejo crushed Los Osos. The Diablos will play Hart in the second round of the Southern Section playoffs on Nov. 26. Hart defeated Mission Viejo in the Southern Section title game last year.
5. Central Catholic (Pittsburgh, Pa.) – (13-0) *5
Last Game: Defeated Gateway, 28-0, in the WPIAL Class AAAA championship.
Notes: Senior running back Eugene Jarvis ran for a WPIAL Class AAAA championship-game record 221 yards and scored two touchdowns on 21 attempts to lead Central Catholic to a rout of Gateway. The Central Catholic defense earned the first shutout in a WPIAL Class AAAA title game since 1990. The Vikings will face Erie McDowell in the PIAA Class AAAA state quarterfinals on Nov. 26.
6. Colerain (Cincinnati, Ohio) – (13-0) *6
Last Game: Defeated Moeller, 34-6, in the Division I, Region 4 finals.
Notes: Colerain rolled up 305 yards on the ground to cruise past Moeller. Senior quarterback Dominick Goodman led the way with 168 yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries and added a touchdown pass. The Cardinals will play Worthington Kilbourne in the Division I state semifinals on Nov. 27.
7. John Curtis (River Ridge, La.) – (11-0) *7
Last Game: Defeated Plaquemine, 38-0, in the Class 4A regional round.
Notes: Sophomore Joe McKnight started off the game in a big way for John Curtis with a 45-yard touchdown. He followed that up with a 40-yard punt return that set up a 24-yard field goal by Josh Medley, and the Patriots were well on their way to a win after that. Curtis will travel to play Bossier in the Class 4A state quarterfinals on Nov. 26.
8. Lufkin (Lufkin, Texas) – (12-0) *8
Last Game: Defeated Pflugerville, 33-17, in the Class 5A Division II, Region II area round.
Notes: Senior running back Jorvorskie Lane rushed for 241 yards and four touchdowns and caught a 25-yard touchdown pass to lead Lufkin past Pflugerville. Lufkin will play Longview (12-0) in the Class 5A Division II, Region II semifinals on Nov. 27.
9. Armwood (Seffner, Fla.) – (10-1) *9
Last Game: Defeated Mariner, 50-7, in the Class 4A Region 3 semifinals.
Notes: Senior running back Demetrius McCray rushed for 130 yards and four touchdowns and Armwood racked up 310 yards on the ground en route to a dominating win over Mariner. The Hawks will play Middleton in the Class 4A Region 3 finals on Nov. 26.
10. Centennial (Peoria, Ariz.) – (12-0) *10
Last Game: Defeated Chaparral, 30-0, in the Class 4A state quarterfinals.
Notes: Junior running back Tim House ran for 154 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries and senior running back Terry Longbons added a 7-yard touchdown run as the Coyotes blanked Chaparral. Longbons re-injured the ankle that has kept him out for most of the season. Centennial will face Moon Valley (11-0) in the Class 4A state semifinals on Nov. 26.
11. Camden County (Kingsland, Ga.) – (13-0) *11
Last Game: Defeated Cherokee, 37-7, in the Class AAAAA state quarterfinals.
Notes: The Wildcats won their 28th consecutive game to earn a spot in the state semifinals against Lowndes (13-0) on Nov. 27. Running back Brandon West was the star for Camden County, as he ran for three touchdowns and accumulated more than 140 yards of total offense.
12. Jenks (Jenks, Okla.) – (11-0) *12
Last Game: Defeated Westmoore, 34-14, in the Class 6A state quarterfinals.
Notes: Senior running back Freddie Carolina ran for 132 yards and two touchdowns and senior quarterback Andrew Brewer threw two touchdown passes as the Trojans won their 21st consecutive game. Senior linebacker Phillip Dillard led the defense with 16 tackles. Jenks will play Putnam City North in the Class 6A state semifinals on Nov. 27.
13. LaGrange (LaGrange, Ga.) – (13-0) *13
Last Game: Defeated Carrollton, 17-3, in the Class AAA state quarterfinals.
Notes: Senior quarterback Thad Todd completed 15-of-17 passes for 123 yards and a touchdown to lead the Grangers to their 27th consecutive win. LaGrange will play M.L. King in the Class AAA state semifinals on Nov. 27.
14. Everett (Everett, Mass.) – (8-0) *14
Last Game: Did not play.
Notes: The Crimson Tide will play at Cambridge Rindge & Latin for the Greater Boston League title on Thanksgiving.
15. Hoover (Hoover, Ala.) – (12-0) *15
Last Game: Defeated John Carroll, 42-0, in the second round of the Class 6A state playoffs.
Notes: Hoover limited John Carroll to just 82 yards of total offense, and defensive lineman Dwarn Smith helped key the effort with three sacks and seven tackles. The Buccaneers racked up 415 yards of total offense, and quarterback Jarod Bryant completed 11-of-15 passes for 128 yards and a touchdown and ran for another score. Hoover will play Spain Park in the Class 6A quarterfinals on Nov. 26.
16. South Panola (Batesville, Miss.) – (13-0) *16
Last Game: Defeated Madison Central, 21-3, in the Class 5A state quarterfinals.
Notes: Senior quarterback/cornerback Derek Pegues ran for 162 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries, accumulated 241 yards of total offense and intercepted a pass on defense as the Tigers won their 28th straight game. South Panola will play Clinton in the Class 5A state semifinals.
17. Southern Durham (Durham, N.C.) – (12-0) *17
Last Game: Defeated Ragsdale, 48-41, in the second round of the Class 3AA state playoffs.
Notes: Charles Gamble ran for 215 yards and four touchdowns, Whitmin Reese added 116 yards and a touchdown, and Southern Durham withstood 26 fourth-quarter points from Ragsdale to escape with the win. Ragsdale senior running back Toney Baker, who is rated the No. 3 overall recruit in the Class of 2005 by SchoolSports.com, ran for 147 yards and two touchdowns and caught an 11-yard touchdown pass in the loss.
18. Maine South (Park Ridge, Ill.) – (13-0) *18
Last Game: Defeated Warrenville South, 29-13, in the Class 8A state semifinals.
Notes: Senior quarterback Sean Price completed 19-of-26 passes for 300 yards and two touchdowns as Maine South earned a spot in the Class 8A state championship game, where it finished runner-up to Lockport last year. The Hawks will play Downers Grove North in the Class 8A state title game on Nov. 27.
19. Christian Brothers Academy (Syracuse, N.Y.) – (12-0) *20
Last Game: Defeated Webster Thomas, 44-14, in the Class AA state semifinals.
Notes: Greg Paulus threw two touchdown passes, Lavar Lobdell had a touchdown reception and an 89-yard kickoff return for another score, and Brian Bojko had two touchdown runs as Christian Brothers dismantled Webster Thomas. The Christian Brothers defense also played a big part by forcing four turnovers. The Brothers will play defending state champion New Rochelle in the Class AA state title game on Nov. 27.
20. Joliet Catholic (Joliet, Ill.) – (13-0) *22
Last Game: Defeated Jacksonville, 42-13, in the Class 5A state semifinals.
Notes: Joe Benson ran for 163 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries and Bill McKeon ran for 105 yards and a touchdown and caught two touchdown passes as Joliet Catholic advanced to the state finals. The defending state champion Hilltoppers will square off against Morris in the Class 5A state championship game on Nov. 27.
21. Pasco (Pasco, Wash.) – (12-0) *23
Last Game: Defeated Bethel, 70-28, in the Class 4A state quarterfinals.
Notes: Pasco overwhelmed Bethel with an offensive attack that produced 35 points in the first quarter. Pasco quarterback Shayne Kelly did most of the damage by completing 13-of-17 passes for 231 yards and five touchdowns. Leon Jackson added 99 yards rushing and two touchdowns on nine carries. The Bulldogs will play Skyline in the Class 4A state semifinals on Nov. 27.
22. Muskegon (Muskegon, Mich.) – (13-0) *NR
Last Game: Defeated Rochester Adams, 35-0, in the Division 2 state semifinals.
Notes: The Big Reds enter the rankings after blanking Rochester Adams, which entered the game with a 12-0 record. Muskegon, which held the Highlanders to just 103 yards and eight first downs, will play Orchard Lake St. Mary's in the Division 2 state title game on Nov. 26.
23. Snider (Fort Wayne, Ind.) – (14-0) *NR
Last Game: Defeated Penn, 49-7, in the Class 5A state semifinals.
Notes: Snider enters the rankings after dominating Penn to earn a spot in the Class 5A state championship game, where the Panthers will play defending state champion Warren Central on Nov. 27. In the win over Penn, J.C. Martin ran for 175 yards and three scores and Terrence Hayden ran for 135 yards and a touchdown and threw for another score.
24. Union (Tulsa, Okla.) – (11-1) *24
Last Game: Defeated Putnam City, 54-7, in the Class 6A state quarterfinals.
Notes: Union racked up 451 yards of total offense, including 353 rushing yards, to crush Putnam City. Senior running back Tony Moore led the offense with 195 rushing yards and a touchdown. The Redskins will play Edmond Santa Fe in the Class 6A state semifinals on Nov. 27.
25. Los Alamitos (Los Alamitos, Calif.) – (10-1) *25
Last Game: Defeated Long Beach Cabrillo, 42-6, in the first round of the CIF Division I Southern Section playoffs.
Notes: Los Alamitos started off the postseason by crushing Long Beach Cabrillo. The Griffins will play Bishop Amat in the second round of the Southern Section playoffs on Nov. 26.
No. 19 Good Counsel (Wheaton, Md.) – (11-1)
Last Game: Lost to DeMatha, 30-29, in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference championship.
Notes: The Falcons' dream season was ended by former nationally ranked DeMatha, which had lost to Good Counsel earlier this season. Good Counsel had a chance to take the lead when it had the ball at the DeMatha 4-yard line trailing 30-27 with less than two minutes to play. But in a bizarre play, Good Counsel quarterback Reggie Gooch turned the wrong way on an option and pitched it to an open area. DeMatha safety Carl Chism fell on the fumble and the Stags were able to secure the win. DeMatha junior punter Matt Campbell ran out of the end zone for a safety to provide the final score. It was DeMatha's fourth WCAC title in the last five years. Good Counsel senior running back Jerron Pearson ran for 144 yards and scored two touchdowns in the loss.
No. 21 North Shore (Galena Park, Texas) – (11-1)
Last Game: Lost to Westfield, 56-14, in the Class 5A Division I, Region III semifinals.
Notes: The defending state champion Mustangs were ousted from the playoffs with a crushing loss to Westfield and had their 26-game winning streak snapped in the process. Kevin Stewart led Westfield with 147 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 18 carries, while Allen Sims led North Shore with 99 rushing yards and a touchdown.
