Hines visited the school's Hempstead campus officially on April 15-17, and was swayed enough by the coaches' pitch to offer up a commitment. An undersized, burly four-man capable of hoarding rebounds, Hines played his high school ball at St. Patrick's in Elizabeth, New Jersey.
Reportedly, Murray State, Florida International, and Providence were among the other schools who had expressed interest.
Hines averaged 15.6 points and upwards of six rebounds a game as a sophomore in helping to lead the team to the NJCAA National Tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas, and was named a First Team Division I NJCAA All-American. At the NJCAA National Tournament, Robert scored 15 points with 10 rebounds in a 76-69 opening round loss to Midland College. He collected 19 points in an 80-73 loss to Northeastern Colorado in the consolation round.
