SchoolSports Football Top 25

The SchoolSports.com National Football Top 25 is back and there are already some big changes. Six teams dropped out of the rankings this week, including No. 6 Colerain (Cincinnati, Ohio) and No. 7 Union (Tulsa, Okla.). The biggest riser in the rankings is new No. 9 St. Joseph's Prep (Philadelphia, Pa.), which defeated then-No. 9 Neshaminy (Langhorne, Pa.) and then-No. 10 St. Ignatius (Cleveland, Ohio) to open its season.

Rankings as of Sept. 12, 2005

1. Mission Viejo (Mission Viejo, Calif.) – (2-0) *1
Last Game: Defeated Long Beach Jordan, 69-17.
Notes: The Diablos have outscored their opponents 124-53 in their first two games.

2. Lowndes (Valdosta, Ga.) – (4-0) *2
Last Game: Defeated Meadowcreek, 57-6.
Notes: Sophomore running back Darriet Perry ran for 158 yards and two touchdowns as the Vikings remained undefeated. Lowndes ran for 423 yards as a team.

3. Lakeland (Lakeland, Fla.) – (3-0) *3
Last Game: Defeated Winter Haven, 34-13.
Notes: Lakeland's defense forced four turnovers and limited Winter Haven to just 23 yards on the ground. Junior Chris Rainey blocked a field goal attempt and returned it 54 yards for a score.

4. Southlake Carroll (Southlake, Texas) – (3-0) *4
Last Game: Defeated Plano East, 31-0.
Notes: Senior quarterback Greg McElroy threw for 253 yards and three touchdowns and the Dragons' defense held Plano East to only 37 passing yards.

5. Warren Central (Indianapolis, Ind.) – (4-0) *5
Last Game: Defeated Terre Haute North, 59-3.
Notes: The defending Class 5A state champs have shown no signs of slowing up. Junior fullback Darren Evans ran for 91 yards and three touchdowns and had a touchdown reception in the Warriors' big win over Terre Haute North. It was Warren Central's 12th consecutive win.

6. Long Beach Poly (Long Beach, Calif.) – (1-0) *8
Last Game: Defeated Corona Centennial, 49-27.
Notes: Senior wide receiver Travon Patterson had an 81-yard punt return for a touchdown and had a touchdown reception in Poly's big win. The Jackrabbits will play No. 15 Bellevue (Wash.) on Sept. 16.

7. Longview (Longview, Texas) – (3-0) *11
Last Game: Defeated Lake Highlands, 38-14.
Notes: Senior running back Vondrell McGee ran for 81 yards and two touchdowns and senior running back Chris Ivory ran for 98 yards and a touchdown as Longview crushed Lake Highlands.

8. Independence (Charlotte, N.C.) – (3-0) *12
Last Game: Defeated Olympic, 45-24.
Notes: The Patriots earned their 80th consecutive win with their victory over Olympic.

9. St. Joseph's Prep (Philadelphia, Pa.) – (2-0) *NR
Last Game: Defeated then-No. 10 St. Ignatius (Ohio), 28-14.
Notes: The Hawks beat St. Ignatius a week after defeating then-No. 9 Neshaminy two weeks ago. In the win over St. Ignatius, senior running back John Shaw ran for 200 yards and a touchdown and had a 20-yard touchdown reception.

10. Byrnes (Duncan, S.C.) – (4-0) *13
Last Game: Defeated JL Mann, 65-6.
Notes: The three-time defending state champion Rebels have scored 60 or more points in three of their four wins.

11. Springdale (Springdale, Ark.) – (2-0) *14
Last Game: Defeated Prescott, 46-3.
Notes: Senior quarterback Mitch Mustain threw for 312 yards and five touchdowns, all in the first half. Mustain is rated the nation's No. 12 overall recruit by SchoolSports.com. The Bulldogs play No. 20 Jenks (Okla.) this week.

12. Landstown (Virginia Beach, Va.) – (2-0) *16
Last Game: Defeated Kellam, 68-26.
Notes: Senior wide receiver Percy Harvin had 118 receiving yards and three touchdowns and ran for 133 yards and two touchdowns, proving why he's rated the nation's No. 7 overall recruit by SchoolSports.com.

13. Hoover (Hoover, Ala.) – (3-0) *17
Last Game: Defeated Florence, 51-10.
Notes: The Buccaneers got touchdowns from six different players as they easily captured their 26th consecutive win.

14. Hamilton (Chandler, Ariz.) – (2-0) *19
Last Game: Defeated Paradise Valley, 41-0.
Notes: Hamilton blocked two punts, recovering one for a touchdown, and scored on an interception return in a dominating defensive effort against Paradise Valley.

15. Bellevue (Bellevue, Wash.) – (1-0) *20
Last Game: Defeated Mount Rainier, 35-0.
Notes: Senior wingback Anthony McQueen caught two touchdown passes from senior Brad Bissell, who was 4-of-4 for 148 yards and two touchdowns. Senior Thomas Zaffino had 181 total yards and two touchdowns. The Wolverines plays No. 6 Long Beach Poly (Calif.) on Sept. 16.

16. Rockhurst (Kansas City, Mo.) – (2-0) *21
Last Game: Defeated Columbia Hickman, 37-6.
Notes: Senior running back David Belfonte had two touchdown receptions and added an 80-yard touchdown run as Rockhurst rolled.

17. Glenville (Cleveland, Ohio) – (3-0) *22
Last Game: Defeated Collinwood, 36-12.
Notes: Glenville's explosive offensive attack has been on display early this season. In the win over Collinwood, quarterback Arvell Nelson threw for 213 yards and three touchdowns, wide receiver Ray Small caught three passes for 85 yards and a touchdown and ran for another score and wide receiver Bryant Milligan hauled in four passes for 55 yards and two touchdowns.

18. Bishop McDevitt (Harrisburg, Pa.) – (2-0) *23
Last Game: Defeated State College, 13-10.
Notes: Sophomore linebacker Sharif Blake returned a fumble 43 yards for a touchdown with 6:30 left to play to allow Harrisburg to escape with a win over State College.

19. Joliet Catholic (Joliet, Ill.) – (3-0) *24
Last Game: Defeated Marian Catholic, 57-7.
Notes: Senior running back Joe Benson ran for 255 yards and four touchdowns, including a 71-yarder, on only eight carries to lead the Hilltoppers past Marian Catholic.

20. Jenks (Jenks, Okla.) – (2-0) *NR
Last Game: Defeated then-No. 7 Union, 48-44.
Notes: Jenks overcame a 17-point deficit and scored 28 points in the fourth quarter to defeat Union in the 38th matchup between the two teams. Jenks scored the game-winning touchdown with 18 seconds left on a 64-yard pass from Jake Strain to Isaac Norman.

21. La Marque (La Marque, Texas) – (3-0) *25
Last Game: Defeated Port Neches-Groves, 27-10.
Notes: Junior running back J.J. Mullins ran for 98 yards and a touchdown and junior quarterback Durklyn Haynes added 75 rushing yards and a touchdown to help La Marque continue its hot start.

22. Lufkin (Lufkin, Texas) – (2-0) *NR
Last Game: Defeated Port Arthur Memorial, 33-12.
Notes: Junior quarterback Jeremy Clayborn passed for 295 yards and two touchdowns and junior wide receiver Dez Bryant hauled in six receptions for 168 yards as the Panthers burned Memorial through the air.

23. North Penn (Landsdale, Pa.) – (2-0) *NR
Last Game: Defeated Cardinal O'Hara, 35-28.
Notes: Senior fullback Pete Stoll ran for 145 yards and two touchdowns, including the game winner with 1:12 remaining, to lead the Knights to the close win.

24. Clovis West (Fresno, Calif.) – (1-0) *NR
Last Game: Defeated De La Salle, 7-0.
Notes: The Golden Eagles became the first team to blank De La Salle since 1979. Senior fullback Chris Lewis provided the game's only scoring with a 43-yard touchdown run with 10:24 left in the fourth quarter.

25. St. Xavier (Cincinnati, Ohio) – (3-0) *NR
Last Game: Defeated Columbus St. Francis De Sales, 24-0.
Notes: St. Xavier has shut out two of its first three opponents, including a 7-0 win over then-No. 6 Colerain in the season opener.
