Long Island Lead Guard Has D-1 Interest

The St. Mary's basketball program has a wonderful, rich winning tradition. Head coach Robert Jones expects the tradition to be intact this upcoming season.

One player Jones is counting on to have a big season is point guard Scott Machado. The 6-foot-1 floor general is considered one of the keys this season for the Gaels in their bid to challenge St. Dominic's for the title of best Catholic High School basketball program on Long Island.

"He has a very, very strong physical frame," said Jones, who believes this will help Machado's individual game this season.

Jones also added it takes a mighty big defensive effort to keep the point guard speed, strength and skills of Machado in neutral. "No one can keep in front of him on the drive," Jones said.

This season will be a test for Machado and the rest of the Gaels. The schedule for St. Mary's is very strong with several big name City schools on tap in either scrimmages or games (Rice, Christ The King, Bishop Loughlin, etc). So Scott's abilities will be tested not only in the two big St. Dominic's games, but out of conference.

"Scott is interested in Yale, Rutgers, George Mason, Davidson, Clemson, Hofstra, Holy Cross, Drexel, Army and Norfolk State," Jones said.
