Bronx Native Polishing His Game Up North

Reporter Mike Sullivan has a story on Greg Avila and his progress at Notre Dame Prep ...

Greg Avila, a 6-foot-5 forward from the Bronx, New York, is a player this website has followed over the past few seasons. While at Port Chester High School in New York, Avila was a player who gave us the impression he had a chance to be a solid college basketball player.

Avila has now made his way further North to play prep basketball for head coach Bill Barton at Notre Dame Prep in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. Barton is a terrific teacher and his program plays a tremendous schedule. In other words, Avila is in the right program to make progress in his individual game.

"I like Greg a lot," Avila said. "He didn't play much due to him missing practice due to a family situation."

Barton is referring to this past weekend's event at Pace University. Notre Dame Prep was able to upend a talented South Kent School squad. Avila didn't see many minutes but does have some division one interest.

"Central Connecticut State, Fairfield, Manhattan have been showing interest," Barton said. "He's open. He's getting better too."

In our previous scouting report, this site gave Avila high marks. Brian Towey's report: Avila is a burly yet agile forward who can score on the blocks and face up a little bit. He shows good mobility for his size, and can knock down the mid-range jumper.

"He can play division one basketball," Barton said.
