Southerland Impresses & Interest Is High

The season is approaching the halfway point for Cardozo High School of Bayside, New York. And head coach Ron Naclerio continues to be excited about his swingman, James Southerland, a 6-foot-6. Southerland recently scored 20 points against Niagara Falls High School in the Big Apple Invitational held this past weekend.

"He can shoot the perimeter shot," Naclerio said while watching games yesterday at Hunter College in Manhattan. "In today's game of college basketball, you need to be able to shoot the perimeter shot. If you can, you can play high division one basketball."

There are plenty of high division one programs already scouting Southerland hard. Syracuse University recently made a stop to watch Southerland play.

Virginia Tech, Seton Hall, Rutgers, Florida, St. John's, Virginia Tech, and Louisville previously expressed interest.

"It's early," Naclerio said. "The same schools have been keeping in contact with him. They'll watch him again later in the season and in the summer."

A 2008 prospect, Southerland has ample time to polish not only his individual game but also increase his strength. "If he does that, he'll be very tough to defend," Naclerio said. "He's got time to make himself even better."
