Facing a front line of the New York Elite that possesses two forwards either close to 7 feet or above that magic mark, Samuels still managed to score 13 points around the basket to lift the Metro Hawks past the New York Elite, 82-73.
Samuels, who is being recruited by several big name basketball programs, fought and clawed his way around the rim against 7-foot-2 John Riek Suas, who has long arms and incredible knack for altering shots.
The physical battle was worth the price of admission. The Metro Hawks though had significant help from standout Sylven Landesberg, who scored 18 points.
The Metro Hawks led at the half 38-24. It was a grinding first 16 minutes of play at this Five Star tournament held on the campus of St. John's University.
But the combination of Samuels around the basket and Landesberg's nifty drives to the basket kept the Metro Hawks with a comfortable lead for most of the second half.
Geraldo Suero had a solid game for the Elite. He zipped to the basket for most of his 26 points. Riek Suas scored 11 points. But he had seven blocks in the game and did a nice job battling Samuels throughout the contest.
