Coburn Sparkles For Mount Vernon At IS8

Reporter Mike Sullivan has a story from IS8 on the great game by Mike Coburn ...

Mike Coburn played window washer today. Using a piece of valuable merchandise that rarely is utilized by most high school players, Coburn kissed the glass several times to help his shot find the basket.

Coburn scored 31 points. Mike used the glass many times during this contest to help Mount Vernon slip past a tough New York Panthers team, 76-73.

Coburn, who is headed to Rutgers, was very forceful and confident in his game all game long. He helped push Panthers' guard Josh Watkins into early foul trouble.

And having Kevin Jones aboard your team also helps. Jones netted 13 points in the first eight minutes of play, giving Bob Cimmino's team an 18-10 advantage.

However, Rashard Green and Matt Wafula were solid in the second quarter for the Panthers. The lead shrunk to 41-38. Green and Wafula combined for 25 of the 38 first half points for the Panthers.

Mount Vernon still had a slight lead at 55-53 heading into the fourth quarter. There were a couple of lead changes until a beautiful reverse drive basket by Jones helped Mount Vernon secure the lead for good with under a minute to play.

Jones finished the game with 23 points. Green scored 15 points and Wafula added 22 points for the Panthers.

But it was the terrific play by Coburn throughout the game and the confidence he showed in his shot that was probably the biggest factor in Mount Vernon moving on to the IS8 Spring semifinals to be held in two weekends.
