Westchester Hawks Claim AAU Spot

Reporter Mike Sullivan has game details on Westchester Hawks win ...

From the opening tap, it became very apparent that the Westchester Hawks had just too much talent for the Rockland Rockets during a regional AAU final held at the Island Garden in Hempstead, New York last night.

The 17 and under event was for the right to land a spot for the National AAU tournament to be held in late July at Disney World in Orlando, Florida. The Westchester Hawks made sure they were going to Disney World with a decisive 84-58 victory.

The Westchester Hawks team, coached by Bob Rizzo, is loaded. The Hawks feature some of the best talent from the New York area too in Mookie Jones and Kevin Jones. Kevin scored 21 points, including two three pointers. Mookie is an impressive small forward who had some nifty passes and also contributed eight points, including two three pointers.

Tyshawn Taylor, a 6-foot-3 energetic guard from St. Anthony's High School in Jersey City, New Jersey, was also impressive for the Westchester Hawks. He recorded 20 points, most of them right around the rim on drives or feeds from his teammates.

Westchester lead 18-11 after the first eight minutes of play. They increased the lead to 40-24 at the half and held a decisive advantage of 62-35 heading into the final quarter.

Hakeem Williams of St. Joseph Regional in New Jersey had 15 points for Rockland, including two three pointers. Vince Richmond battled hard near the rim for Rockland too. He had eight points and a few blocks.

But Richmond and Williams and the rest of the Rockland Rockets had to deal with too much division one talent. Westchester is likely to be one of the favorites down in Orlando when they first compete for the Super Showcase and then play in the National AAU tournament. They are balanced and have talent from top to bottom on its roster.

At the Island Garden tonight, the fans got a good look at one of the nation's top AAU teams.
