Fordham Recruit Has Solid Spring

Reporter Mike Sullivan has a story on a player that has already committed to Fordham ...

Anytime a division one basketball program can land a player from highly regarded St. Anthony's High School of Jersey City, New Jersey, you take the commitment with no questions asked.

St. Anthony's features a structured offense and a head coach in Bob Hurley Sr. that preaches in your face defensive basketball. Hurley, Sr. is able to muster the most out of his players year in and year out.

So when Fordham had a chance to grab a commitment from Jiovanny Fontan, the 5-foot-11 rising senior point guard from St. Anthony's, the Rams made the wise choice.

Fontan, who competed this past weekend for the Playaz Junior team in the IS8 Spring League, will be an important asset in the future for the Fordham basketball team.

Dereck Whittenburg and his staff obviously saw a player that can contribute in many ways -- defensively, distributing the ball, and scoring.

BRIAN TOWEY'S REVIEW OF FONTAN'S INDIVIDUAL GAME: His toughness belies his slight frame. He's a solid all-around talent who can run a team and also excels in the transition game.

MIKE SULLIVAN'S VIEW OF FONTAN'S INDIVIDUAL GAME: He is a persistent guard who does a nice job of rotating the ball around the perimeter, first looking for an open teammate and then utilizing his shot.

He showed he can score on drives to the basket as well as displaying a soft touch from the outside.
