Drew's Slam Ignites Hawks Playoff Victory

Reporter Mike Sullivan has the story on the Hawks' playoff victory tonight ...

LAKE BUENA VISTA, FLORIDA -- One would never suspect that Kevin Drew would be the one to deliver a resounding message to the opposition via a slam dunk. But the athletic guard from the Westchester Hawks did percisely that in the first quarter.

Drew's spirited dunk on top of a bigger South Carolina Raven helped lift the Westchester Hawks to a 68-53 victory in the first round of the playoffs in the Gold Division of the 17 and under Super Showcase on the grounds of Disney World.

Yes, there was much more to this victory than Drew's slam. But it got a roar from the crowd inside the Milk House, lifted the spirits of the Hawks' bench, and got the players on the court more excited.

Drew's six points in the first quarter helped the Hawks to an early 18-9 advantage. "Kevin dunked on Mookie (Jones) in a playoff game," said Westchester Hawks' head coach Bob Rizzo, who got a big kick and laugh out of it. "So it's not surprising he did it tonight."

The Hawks kept the nine point lead heading into the third quarter at 38-29. The lead ballooned to 52-36 as the Hawks prepared to play the fourth quarter.

Kevin Jones continued his solid play. He had 16 points while Mookie Jones had four three-pointers and 14 points. Trinity Fields again did an excellent job in the backcourt for Rizzo. He produced 11 points. Simeon Marsalis added 10 points for the winners.

It was balanced scoring for the Westchester Hawks tonight. Now big man Greg Monroe stands in the way of the Hawks trying to reach the semifinals. The quarterfinal matchup is at 3 PM ET. We will have complete coverage on the site.

*There were many college coaches in the audience tonight to watch the Westchester Hawks. Head coaches Norm Roberts and Jim Boeheim again watched the tandem of Mookie and Kevin Jones play. Bob Huggins was also seen today watching the Hawks as was Rutgers head coach Fred Hill.
