The quarterfinal victory in the Gold category of the 17 and under Super Showcase held inside the Milk House on the grounds of Disney World enable the Hawks to advance to a semifinal matchup against the Georgia Blazers.
Southerland, a Syracuse prospect who could reclassify to the class of 2009, used his height and perimeter skills to help the Hawks overcome a six-point fourth-quarter deficit.
With Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim and assistant coach Mike Hopkins looking on, Southerland's size at 6-foot-7 created a favorable mismatch for Bob Rizzo's Westchester Hawks.
But Southerland was just one key in helping the Hawks shake off a 13-8 disadvantage after the first eight minutes of play. Mookie Jones was again simply amazing. He recorded 27 points, including four three-pointers.
Kevin Jones, who had to battle the 7-foot Monroe inside the paint several times, scored 12 points. Monroe had 24 points, many in the first two quarters of play as he used his agility and skill around the rim to score some easy baskets.
Jones, who had 16 of his 27 points in the first two quarters of play, kept Westchester to within 30-25 heading into the third quarter. Southerland got going and Trinity Fields knocked down several key free throws to help the Hawks maintain their lead.
It was a Mookie Jones' three pointer with 4:50 left in the fourth that finally allowed the Hawks to take the lead at 55-54.
Next up for Westchester are the Georgia Blazers in a game to be played tonight. We will have details later on this site.
