New Rochelle Guard Can Play D-1 Ball

Reporter Mike Sullivan has story on Simeon Marsalis of New Rochelle High School ...

PLAYER PROFILE UPDATE: Simeon Marsalis

HEIGHT: 5-foot-11

POSITIONS: Point Guard/Shooting Guard HIGH SCHOOL: New Rochelle High School in New Rochelle, New York

AAU TEAM: Westchester Hawks

AAU TEAM'S HEAD COACH: Bob Rizzo

WESTCHESTER HAWKS AAU PROGRAM DIRECTOR: Tom Jennings

WHAT BOB RIZZO THINKS ABOUT SIMEON MARSALIS' INDIVIDUAL GAME: Simeon is a very athletic guard who has the ability to surprise people defensively and offensively. Simeon has a good basketball IQ. He also is very quick, it's a quickness that sometimes catches either his defender or the person he is defending off guard.

MIKE SULLIVAN'S VIEW ON SIMEON MARSALIS' INDIVIDUAL GAME: Simeon had some solid moments in Orlando, Florida at the Super Showcase. He plays hard and is very active on both ends of the court. He does possess confidence to be a division one player.

Rizzo has previously mentioned that he believes Simeon can play division one basketball. The consistency angle is always important in helping a player like Simeon to the top level. How he succeeds in this category will likely determine the level of college basketball for him over the next six months.

The Hawks made it to the semifinals of the Super Showcase and the Final of the National AAU tournament for 17 and under at the Wide World of Sports complex inside the Milk House on the grounds of Disney World in late July and early August.

There are many reasons why this happened for Bob Rizzo and Tom Jennings' AAU program. Many will point to players like Mookie Jones and Kevin Jones. But the Hawks also had players like Marsalis and Kevin Drew and Trinity Fields, etc that were key pieces to a very successful AAU program this summer.

Hopefully, a division one program or a high division two team will give Simeon a chance -- because he deserves one.
