New York Swingman Likely To Play Up North

Reporter Mike Sullivan updates us on story of Cardozo swingman ...

While Cardozo head coach Ron Naclerio was hoping that his swingman James Southerland would return to Bayside, Queens for one more season, sources close to James Southerland indicate that Notre Dame Prep in Fitchburg, Massachusetts will be his school this season.

Southerland, who has already given a verbal commitment to Syracuse University, is a 6-foot-6 to 6-foot-7 smooth shooting wing forward. Currently, Southerland is listed in the 2008 class, a senior. There are suggestions from sources that James may need another year and would have to be reclassified to the 2009 class.

But James is a talented scoring forward as indicated by the many offers he received before the summer began. Southerland has spent a lot of time competing at IS8 in the past and also had a gig with the Westchester Hawks over the summer, playing for Rob Rizzo's and Tom Jennings' highly regarded AAU program at the Wide World of Sports complex in late July.

Southerland was a member of a team that helped land a semifinal spot in the Super Showcase for 17 and unders inside the Milk House on the grounds of Disney World.

Naclerio was hoping that Southerland would be part of a talented Cardozo team. But sources do suggest that James will be up north for the 2007-2008 season.
