OSNA Guard As Good As Any In NYC Area

Gerardo Suero is as good as any scoring guard in the area ...

The Our Savior New American team is still a relatively new basketball program. Put together about ten years ago by Rev. Ron Stelzer, the Pioneers of Centereach, New York have sent several players to the division one level -- and this includes all levels in college basketball.

The Pioneers have taken their share of bumps along the road too and some tragedy as well. The coaches in the program work hard to produce a high quality basketball program each year. So when you lose players such as John Riek and Leek Leek right before or during the season, it's amazing OSNA still is able to forge out victories.

OSNA did so again this past week in its final home game, defeating Rise Academy of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. And behind this win again were the offensive talents of Gerardo Suero, who had another 30-point plus effort (32 points).

Gerardo is a smooth shooting guard who has the skill to hit floaters in the lane against the bigger bodies defending the rim. He is fearless and possesses cool confidence in his skill level.

Suero didn't have his problems too this season but it had nothing to do playing basketball. When he went back home for the Christmas holidays, he left his passport in his jeans in the washer. The picture became faded and he had to go through some steps to get back into the country.

Despite these defections and bumps, OSNA managed to win 18 of 25 games this season -- a credit to Stelzer, Eric Jaklitsch and Bob Bass, the coaches for the Pioneers.

The big question now is what does Suero do? The 6-foot-3 1/2, 186-pound backcourt player has shown he is quite capable scoring points against any level of competition.

Suero has indicated to the OSNA coaching staff that he would like to play basketball in the states as opposed to returning to the Dominican Republic.

The OSNA coaching staff has said they would have a better idea after the season is over on Suero's status. They have repeated that he has interest from some division one schools. We will keep you posted on his recruiting status.
