Syracuse Recruit Thrives For City Rocks

Reporter Mike Sullivan has a story on James Southerland ...

James Southerland has bounced around a bit on the AAU level. Last summer, he spent some time with the Westchester Hawks in Florida. This past weekend, he competed for the Albany City Rocks.

"I knew he was a good player but when you see him up close you can't help but like his game," said Jim Hart, the director of the Albany City Rocks AAU program.

Southerland, who spent this past season at Notre Dame Prep in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, previously had been a big part of Cardozo High School's basketball program. Cardozo coach Ron Naclerio knows the skill level of Southerland.

"He can knock down the jumper and with his size he's going to be a good college player," he said.

Hart agreed. "I saw a player that's athletic, who can dunk, and who has the skill level of knocking down the mid-range jumper out to the three-point line."

Hart stated that Southerland, 6-foot-7, had two games of 19 and 18 points.

Previously, Southerland suited up with the D-I Stars at the IS8 League in Queens last Fall. "I see him fitting in with no problem at Syracuse," Hart said. "He does a lot of nice things on the court. He can score in many different ways."
