Syracuse Recruit Ready For Big East Challenge

Reporter Mike Sullivan has a story on Syracuse recruit Mookie Jones ...

Peekskill High School swingman Mookie Jones said he was happy to have a chance to play in the Jordan Brand Regional game last night at Madison Square Garden. Unfortunately, due to playing time and the usual Mookie unselfishness, the paying patrons inside the world's most famous arena didn't have a chance to see what his talented senior could really do.

Jones, 6-foot-7, played played just 14 minutes and took only four shots. He converted three of his chances at the rim while also retrieving eight rebounds.

"I had a good time and a great week here," he said. "So I enjoyed it."

Mookie will play for Syracuse University next season. "I spoke to Coach Boeheim right after the Final Four," he said. "Just to get an idea on when I would be heading up. He said be ready. I said, I am."

Jones said before he heads up to Syracuse to begin summer classes in late June, he was going to focus on individual workouts. "I want to get more into weight training and be ready for the college game," he stated. "It's more physical and the Big East is one of the best conferences in the country."

Mookie has the skill level to score from anywhere on the court. He's unselfish too. "It's important that everyone on the court is involved," he explained. "When I get my shot, I'll take it."

Jones dropped down two three-pointers last night as well, showing the range on his perimeter game. "It's about getting your shots and being confident," he said. "I want to improve that too over the summer so I'm going to work hard at that."

When asked about going to a place where the fan support is huge, he smiled: "It makes it easier playing in front of a lot of fans that support you. It's going to be exciting to play there."
